Hello,

I recently bought a Dell Precision Tower 7910. It just has an SSD. But I want to install an additional hard drive. I do alot of vfx type 3D work, so will be writing lots of files to the drive, so doing this on the SSD is probably a bad idea I know.

I found this video that shows someone installing a hard drive on my PC and it looks like a bit of work, but I have no experience of this. If anyone has time to look - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIzH5OTX2n0

Do I need to do all of this to install a new hard drive? Also, if anyone can recommend what hard drive to get, that would be really helpful. Bigger hard drive isn't necessarily better is this correct? How reliable ate 3TB ones?

Thank you

Cheers for the reply. Because of the big space I need and the amount of writing of files, I will be installing a HDD. I think that would suit best, but correct me if I'm wrong.

OK about the 3.5 bays, does this mean that they just slide into them bays? Or do I have to actually open up the PC and install them a different way? Sorry, this is just not something I'm familiar with.

Would this drive suit my needs for example?

Thanks again

A SSD for speed, and a HDD for capacity is a common solution. The OS and a few applications on the SSD, and everything else (DATA and most applications) on the HDD. It's what I have in 2 of my home systems, and a lot of others do this as well.

As far as the drive itself. I would recommend the WD Black over the Green. Of course the Green isn't necessarily a bad choice, but the Green has a variable speed to control power usage and noise - which sacrifices performance, and also has only a 2 year warranty. The WD Black runs at 7200RPM, and has a 5 year warranty, but costs a little more. If you scroll down on this page, it shows a chart with the differences between the WD Blue, Black, Green, Red, and Purple drives.

Cheers for the link, that looks a great option.

Just about my question in relation to installing it - do you have any idea?

There should be room in the drive bay to slide a new drive into without making adjustments. So you just slide it in, put a few screws in to hold it in place, and connect the power and data cables.

Once you boot back into windows, you may need to go into disk manager and partition and format the drive. go to start and type diskmgmt.msc in the run box to open disk manager

Cheers for the info man
