I have both front and back panel running but I want to lower the volume of the back panel. Is it possible to control the volume of the back and front panel independently?
it depends on the sound card you have built in on your motherboard in some cases like realtek sound drives it can be done by separating the front panel and back panel. then it can run different items at the same time as the volume of each of them can be configured too.

Yeah I knew about that but I want to play the same thing on both front and back.
well there are three options that you can go with:
1-either using jack volume controllers that using a switch to adjust the current of the audio channel like the image bellow: http://image.allekabels.nl/image/1204110-0/inline-volume-regelaar-3.0-m-regel-het-volume-van-uw-koptelefoon-eenvoudig-met-deze-ingebouwde-volumeregeling.jpg
2-using channel adjustment software , that way you should configure the sound system as surround sound and by the software you could adjust the volume by the channel like rear - front - side - center you could just config the channel you want to adjust as like front and then control the volume from the software.: http://www.xbitlabs.com/images/multimedia/terratec-aureon71/Panel_Playback.jpg
3-using the room correction option in realtek HD audio manager: this is a option in the realtek software that you put the distance between speakers and your self and the audio adjusts by the distance.you can find this option in speaker tab of the Realtek HD audio manager and then in room correction tab enable room correction option and put the distances or adjust the DBs.
let me know if any of these ways helped.
