There are dozens of other graphics applications, that are not as hardware intensive as PS is.
Many of these other applications are Free and open source.
Excactly. I can only imagine the machine torture it would be trying to force most the most recent Adobe suit to run on that hardware.

Running something like Linux Mint Mate or Xfce (just one of many alternatives) as OS, and install Gimp and Inkscape will most certainly give a way more responsive system. At least you'd have a decent chance to get the work done (and rather spend money on food and other necessities instead of licenses).
