Adom_winbeta4 character gen error

I try to generate a character using this version, and as soon as I've
chosen my talent set, it crashes (assuming I've chosen "very skilled"
as a talent). The adom.err file says:

"Basic ADOM Bug Report Data
--------------------------

Version: Version 1.1.1 (Windows)
Error: Illegal skill advancement (3/0)."

And then follows with a partial state dump. (which is mostly zeros)

Anyone know a workaround, or has Tom just not got around to implemting
it in the Windows version yet?

This is perhaps the most frequent bug report in the
database on adom.de. The game will crash if you select
Skilled and/or a derived talent. Just don't select it and
you'll be fine.

There is a patch, but it does more than merely fix this
problem. It tampers seriously with game mechanics and
makes the game significantly easier. The patch is not
official in any way. You can find it here

http://www.stud.ntnu.no/~houeland/adom/

My subjective recommendation is _not_ to use it and accept
the flaws for time being.

It may be a problem when you run out of talent choices. (But this won't
happen in practice, since it is only available at character birth.)

The same will be true for other buggy talents that may crop up - they will
render the game unplayable.

I knew there was at least one person out there who didn't know about this
bug! 'Luckily' our bug list failed totally in informing people about bugs.
Great. So right now we can't use it for Thomas, because it's incomplete
and nobody new to adom knows about it.
I just *love* things that don't serve any purpose at all ;-)

Next time just take a look at http://adombugs.100free.com/

What would you expect? I'd guess that 90% of the ADOM players have never
set foot into this newsgroup. Most of them probably don't know what a
newsgroup *is*.

Let's not be rude; there's no reason to expect that Tim knows about that
list.

No, it wasn't meant as being rude towards Tim (sorry Tim, if you have
thought so), it was just that I wanted to make a point what the current
bug list is good for: not very much.
But we should think about what we want the bug list for. If it is for
Thomas, it is useless, because it's incomplete. If it is for newbies it is
pointless, because nobody knows about it. It's just that I tried to figur
out what current use it has.

Sorry Tim.

It's a work in progress. We're already discussing extracting the bug
database and going through it to make a complete and useful bug list and
such... give it time.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Let's see what comes out of the attempt of contacting Thomas. I am sure
we can put the list to some useful purpose, but there is little we can
(and should) do without discussing it with Thomas first. Patience is a
virtue. 🙂

Yeah patience is a virtue. But in that thread a year ago, where this idea
was already discussed, it just lead to a discussion whether winrar or bzip
were better. I just wanted to avoid that kind of failure this time. As
twinge said:

And after all I am German, I am used to somebody telling me what to do and
then doing it. And not sitting around and endlessly discussing it. ;-)

No, something *did* happen. Thomas got an e-mail and he said "No".
Being reasonable people, we politely accepted his decision.

I wonder if Thomas enjoys all that shouting then?

Yeah, the German term for that is "blinder Aktivismus". 🙂

With a little help from google language tools, that was a pretty
funny remark.
