Can this be good?

If Dell went with AMD, AMD can get some money if they need it. Guaranteed orders are worth a lot.

Didn't Dell go with AMD CPUs already? Or are you talking exclusively with AMD?

Also, Dell won't AMD get money, if Dell gets products from AMD at a substanially discounted price, which an exclusive deal usually means.

I would think IBM would be interested in them with their stock down like this. If the NY fab deal was a lock, IBM would love to get the kick back while making a 45nm production fab. IF IBM has High K metal gates and some other technology they think they could get to market quickly, it could put AMD as the real deal for competing with Intel.

AMD is in a bad spot. Most of us "non AMD Fanboys" have seen the Iceberg drifting around for awhile and kinda figured AMD was on course for it. K8L and a crappy 65nm process could very well sink AMD after spending their wad on ATI in a desparate attempt to protect themselves from a bleak future in the CPU market.

I would like to note again that Apple looked at IBM,AMD, and Intel for supplying it processors and went with Intel. Everything that has happened so far since then was pretty much known to be going to happen by Steve Jobs because he research all the companies and they all told them what they had comming in the next couple years. Just a thought, maybe this includes AMDs ability to pull off 65nm and the K8L performance.......

getting bought out by a PE firm doesn't mean the company would fold, they would just be owned by a new group. It could be a good thing. Most of those PE firms will really shake up the management system and get things going straight because they want a quick profit. this could really help AMD

You don't understand how corporae finance works. If a company gets guaranteed orders, a bank will float them credit. Of course Dell wn't "give" them any money.

Would it really be such a bad thing for AMD to be bought? If they are bought by someone with deep pockets they can avoid their normally hand-to-mouth existance.

That said they should only be bought by a reputable company e.g. IBM. Not M$ (I dont need any SSE5 "Revenge of the Hardware DRM" extensions in my CPUs)

How would you describe the other 8000 65nm processes? Oh you mean there are only two companies making them?

So how do you describe a "crappy" 65nm process? One that doesn't fit your high quality standards?

Smart people who are concerned about the ENTIRE industry and neither CPU company knows AMD is the little engine that could.

I can see why Hector and Dirk got mad at the Q4 Analyst meeting. Back before Opteron, AMD was the low cost alernative - even though perf was similar.

Now that Core 2 has come out with firesale prices (E6300 is still 100s less than 965EE) it's all oom and gloom.

Most of you DESERVE a monopoly that rips you off. Fortunately for those of us who just want a PC and who careswho makes the CPU we can

ALL HAIL THE DUOPOLY!!!!!!

P.S.

So far this year AMD has licensed GPUs for handhelds, Turion for embedded, sold 200mm equipment, will sell more, introduced a new Home platform and a new mobo standard, etc.

What more do you want Wall Street?

Wouldn't that be a sweat little package for say..... microsoft...

or maybe big daddy ibm...

Ah, welcome to my world. I too think that Microsoft may someday purchase AMD...just some fun speculation.

Fortunately for those of us who just want a PC and who careswho makes the CPU we can...

So, you're implying that you would purchase a pc regardless of what cpu is in it, like an Intel cpu?

Come on BM, we all know you better than that. You only started saying "All hail the duopoly" when Intel began trouncing the competition.

How do you knwo what my thoughts were? I have been saying tat IBM wanted two CPU sources from the beginning. Trouncing? WHat does that mean? That if we play a deathmatch a Core 2 CPU means I won't leave you on the deathmatch floor?

No I know it means that people with no life don't have to wait as long for their DVD to burn.

No, this has to be it. SuperPI actually has value in the real world.

Combining Intel's isolationist policies and the creepy people who seem to be in the Brood, I personally won't buy an Intel chip.

I will sell them as long as the goverment and people put up with them but I don't like their business model.

Doubtful it will ever happen.

What's all this supposition about IBM? The article stated that it's rumored that AMD will be bought by a "private equity group". That's not a company or conglomerate, but a group of investors looking to cash in on the success of a company. Generally speaking, an equity group would not be interested in the daily operations of AMD but more interested in capital gains and cashing in on the stock value. If an equity group did get involved in the daily operations, it would end up a case of the product and market strategy being controlled by the ubiquitous "bean-counters". If this were to actually happen, it could be bad for AMD and the consumer because one of the outcomes could be the equity group selling off peices of AMD to ensure that they get a return on their investment.

AMD may not look good on paper right now because of absorbing ATI's liabilities and the success of Core, but with 65nm set to release this year, ATI and the R600, as well as revamping their fabs, they've taken a long term approach and it seems AMD is in it for the long game.

I don't know what your talking about or what it has to do with what I said?

So how do you describe a "crappy" 65nm process? One that doesn't fit your high quality standards?
AMD was late to market, took a performance hit, and is slow in Ramping their 65nm process. This is crappy.

Smart people who are concerned about the ENTIRE industry and neither CPU company knows AMD is the little engine that could.
I personally benefit from Intel doing well. My post does not root for the demise of AMD, it was an "I told you this might happen" to the AMD fanboys that argued with me 4 months ago.

I can see why Hector and Dirk got mad at the Q4 Analyst meeting. Back before Opteron, AMD was the low cost alernative - even though perf was similar.

Feel better? Yes, Intel is trying to regain market share. This is what companies do to be successful.

Most of you DESERVE a monopoly that rips you off. Fortunately for those of us who just want a PC and who careswho makes the CPU we can ALL HAIL THE DUOPOLY!!!!!!
Ouch, protect me by buying a more expensive product that performs worse. Thanks.

Better profit margins on product. The same thing holding Intel back from record profits.

I can see IBM possibly buying AMD, Microsoft is much more iffy. They could do it in a straight cash purchase in theory, but I don't know who would be happy about that. I've always pictured AMD as not for sale, especially these days now that they're extremely competitive with Intel in just about everything and their future is looking as bright as ever.

65nm hit the other parts of the world first. They changed the latency for larger future caches.

How do YOU personally benefit? Are you a stockholder?

But they are still selling NetBurst for more. That's ripping off those who don't know.

No X2 is more expensive than the comparable Core 2 so you must mean Presler,Bensley, and Prescott.

So why don't you complain to Intel that they are screwing up their own profits?

I've always pictured AMD as not for sale, especially these days now that they're extremely competitive with Intel in just about everything and their future is looking as bright as ever.

Which is why their stock price is in the shiitter just before they launch Barcelona

Hint: Stocks are priced 6-18 months ahead ... investors dont think much of AMDs outlook until at least end 2008.
