Hello, as an add on thread to my splitting Linux and windows from a hard drive, I have created this thread so I can keep that post specificly for the actual moving of windows or Linux. Here I want to find out the best type of hard drive to use, what size and if there is a difference in brands.

so, I have 1tb hdd storing games, 120gb ssd storing my linux and window and 500gb hd with nothing on it.

so, is using the older type of ssd better to use than the hard disk drive or not, if not why, if yes why, what are the pros and cons for my daily usage/budget? Again, is the m.2 style ssd better than the older type of ssd again for my usage or not?

Solution
So, why would 120 go be too small to run windows

can i install applications for windows on another hard drive?
I need to work out what applicactions I would be using in the near future, what size they are first right?
A 120GB can be made to work, but it almost always ends up in spending too much time in space management.
For a 120GB SSD, you need to keep some free space. This means you can only really use 80-85GB, leaving the rest blank.

We see it here all the time.
Applications on other drives? Yes, but they are generally not the problem. Most applications take up little space themselves.

Its all the other stuff.
Game saves, personal files, temp files, etc, etc.

And putting applications on an HDD defeats the purpose...
SSD's are great for many types of programs, OS included, that need rapid access to many small files.
This is your random 4k benchmark and if you compare an ssd to an hdd , the ssd is hugely faster. This is because an HDD has to move the heads from one sector to another which takes more time then it does to read the file.

I wasn't really planning to buy a new hard drive, I have 3, and dont currently have any budget for one, so if its needed right away i would say cheaper the better, but I don't want to buy twice if you know what I mean?

So...
120GB SSD
500GB HDD
1TB HDD

Correct?

The 120GB SSD is way faster than the HDD. But it is pretty small.
If you don't want to buy something new (and there is nothing wrong with that), work with what you have.

Solution
Yeah, sandisk is my preference. I have had many sd cards, memory sticks etc all sandisk and never failed me.
Interestingly, a Sandisk is the only SSD of mine (among over a dozen), that I've had die.
Also interestingly, Sandisk honored the warranty even though it was 33 days past the 3 year warranty.

I knew it, they knew it. They gave me a new one anyway.
The replacement is running just fine 2 years later.
I would not hesitate to buy another.

Okay, I will buy this next week, maybe monday or Tuesday. It would give me enogu time to research the splitting of the hard drive OS.

should I keep the 120GB ssd, the exact same ssd just smaller that I already have in my pc?
