Advent laptop vertical coloured lines

laptop screen has vertical coloured lines anybody any suggestions as to how to repair??

Do the lines change when you move the screen up or down? (could be a loose monitor ribbon cable in the hinge.)
Is the output okay on an external monitor? (could be a failed or overheating GPU, or a shot screen.)
