I'll try and keep this short. Title says it all; back in 2010 I bought myself a new desktop as follows:-

CPU: Intel Core i7-860 (2.80GHz) 8MB Cache.
Motherboard: ASUS P7P55D DELUXE.
Memory: 4GB CORSAIR XMS3 DUAL-DDR3 1333MHz.
GPU: 1GB ATI RADEON™ HD 5850.
PSU: 600W

I'm now looking to upgrade a couple of components myself but wanted to make sure my logic checks out, hence me posting this thread. I want to upgrade the GPU and RAM as follows:-

Nvidia GTX960 2GB (probably MSI)
8GB DDR3 1600Mhz (Corsair, Crucial etc...)
A new primary SSD may also follow with a fresh OS install.

My 600W PSU should be plenty big enough as the GTX960 only uses a little more power than my current Radeon5850. My main concerns stem from the compatibility of whatever RAM I buy. I've read that the 'PC' number of the memory needs to be compatible with my mobo, but can't seem to find that information for my mobo. It supports the 1600Mhz.

Secondly, the reason for the upgrade is to play some of the more demanding games that are now being released (no prizes for guessing which one in particular!) which are making my 5850 obsolete. Will my first generation i7 CPU also need to be upgraded, or should all be fine even though there may be a little bottlenecking?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

the motherboard will support upto 2300Mhz Ram so you will be fine with the 1600Mhz, your CPU will not bottleneck the new GPU or at least it shouldn't do, you wont be playing the newest games on ultra at 60fps but you will have a very good mid/high end setup with this upgrade.

Thanks for the feedback Hawkshot. I think I shall go ahead and start ordering tha new GPU then. You've put my mind at rest about my 1st Generation CPU. Even though it's an i7 I wasn't sure about how it would hold up against today's i3's or i5's.

Well, it surely is starting to show it's age and just somehow holds up against the 4th generation i5's. But GPU right now is indeed the best upgrade.
The cpu can still hold up few years. Maybe until the mid of 2017/early 2018.

As for PSU, which model and brand is it?
