Hi

I'm considering upgrading my old PC with new hardware. I'm thinking about buying
-an ASRock X79 Extreme4 motherboard
-an Intel Core I7-3820 CPU
-an SSD (I already own a 1 TB HDD)
-For Graphics I've already bought an Sapphire RADEON HD 7870 OC Graphics card and I have a chassis and a 750 W power supply.
-Noctua NH-D14 SE2011

I am however really in doubt about which RAM to buy. I've thought about Kingston HyperX 4 x 4 GB RAM (1866 MHz), which is compatible but I'm not sure if I should go for another frequency? The MB supports up to 2400 MHz but as I understand it this does not neccesarily give any performance boost given the CPU type? I don't think I'll be overclocking the CPU but you never know (if that makes any difference concerning choice of RAM). Physical space is also a matter as RAM with high heat sinks wont fit with the Noctua Fan.

Considering the fan, would this be enough to cool the system along with a standard 120 mm exhaust fan?

I there's anyone out there who can give me recommendations/hints about the RAM issue and/or the fan I would much appreciate it!

I would just grab this RAM. It has a CAS latency of 9 and a speed of 1866 MHz. It is also low profile which should help with your clearance issues. If you wanna save a few dollars, just go with the 1600 MHz version. It doesn't really matter. You're not gonna see any real world differences.

What do you plan on doing with this build exactly?

So for example go with the Asrock Z68 EXTREME7 GEN3 motherboard along with an Intel I5-3575k processor?

This should fit with the Noctua Noctua NH-D14

The quesions concerning both RAM (what frequency) and cooler (enough with an exhaust fan alone) exists though..??

Nope to what?

Why not Z68?

Primarily gaming - like Civ5

Thanks - any hints as to which is good? What about ASRock Z77 Extreme6/TB4

Was actually looking at the extreme 4.

What about memory type?

Will a noctua be sufficient? Also if i decide to overclock?

why so worried about memory? all you need to do is get the cheapest set of 2x4gb 1600mhz cl9 ram and you are good to go. there is a kit of patriot intel extreme masters at amazon going for 31.99

yes it is sufficient. i have one myself. just go buy the 2011 vresion and ask noctua for a 1155 mounting kit. that way you get pwn fans unlike the regular edition of the d14

I wouldn't say that I'm worried about memory type. I just want to get the right type and a good and fast one too. I'm not that much of a hardware man though so I have no clue if I would get a real performance boost by getting higher frequency ram or I should in stead look at latency, voltage, ..?

Concerning the fan, from what I can read the Noctua is the top here and as the I5-3570K apparently runs at high temperatures, especially when overclocked, I think I'll go for this. Guess I just wait and see if its enough.
