[SOLVED] Advice need it: Does this upgrade make sense i3 6100 to i5 10400?

Hi guys, currently my brother have a Core i3 6100 with 1 single stick of 8GB DDR4 2133 (yes I know, 1 single stick .... it makes me sick but I could not fix it because he didn't wanted to spend any more money).... with a GTX 1060 6GB (plays at 1080p on a basic LG IPS 60Hz panel)

Long story short he now want to upgrade the PC.

I told him the cheapest thing to get for some extra performance was to try to find 2x8GB DDR4 sticks that work on his B150 mobo, but instead he said its was about time to change everything but the GPU (other parts are +5 years old). He sees no point in spend more money on this older platform, which for me, 5 years later since purchase day, make sense.

Problem is I could not find many budget options right now as for CPU, and he does not want to wait until new B660 mobos arrive and to be at a decent price.

So with that in mind and considering how "expensive" AMD has become now, I finally found a very good deal on a 10400F + Asus B560M-A (Prime) + 2x8GB DDR4. Does this sound like a good option?

GPU will be the same GTX 1060 6GB.

Thank you for any input!

The limitation will be the 1060 for gaming and graphical task, but a totally worthwhile upgrade to the CPU.
If brother isn't already on an SSD that would be a much more meaningful seat of the pants upgrade along with a matched set of RAM to the older system.

Thank you punkncat!, and hes on an SSD since last year.

And yes, the limitation for gaming will be the GTX 1060 but perhaps, with some luck, we may be able to get a newer GPU at a decent price later on. Im not expecting pre-pandemic/crypto"madness" prices, but at least better than right now.

That's a very worth while CPU upgrade with a 3.5x increase in raw performance. There are lots of triple A games that run fine on a 1060 but are practically unplayable on a i3 6100, so it will certainly benefit you even without a new GPU.

Are you looking to buy new?
What is the price for the combo?

Buying new, I think current 12th gen is usually a better buy.
New products are not launched unless they can beat what is currently out there.

The 11400 is stronger, and word is that the upcoming 12100 will be even better.

Already got it (10400F + Asus B560M-A (Prime) + 2x8GB DDR4 ), everything brand new. And hes really very happy with the performance boost.

Sadly where we live there are huges difference in money between 10400 and 11400. And Alder Lake is even way up. Besides there are no B6660 motherboards and Z690 are very, very expensive.

Also he didn't wanted to wait anymore. He asked me for a budget solution that make the games work better and that was the best I was able to find in such a short time.

There's very little difference in gaming between the 10400 and 11400, the latter isn't always faster either. The 10400 is a solid budget pick if you can't step up to Alder Lake. If he's been on a dual core all this time then it will be like driving a sportscar.

Exactly, I remember wtaching and reading reviews of the 11400 last year, and it was not always the faster one of the two. And yes the difference with a GTX 1060 is probably none at all (all those benchmarks are done with a top tier GPU).
