I'm a college student, and I'm looking for a laptop for personal everyday use. I came down to choosing between the Dell XPS 13 and latitude 14 inch 7490 (or similar latitude), and can't figure out which one is overall better. I'm a little put off about the latitude because it's often referred to as a business laptop, though I'm not sure how big a deal that is. Any input or advice is greatly appreciated!

Can you provide a link to the 2 specific laptops?

We know nothing about the details.

As a general proposition, I might prefer the business line as it might be more durable. But maybe the other one has some feature that is important to you. That's unknown as of right now.

"Overall better" is probably more of a crapshoot than you would like, particularly as regards reliability.

Do you have any particular requirements beyond "personal everyday use"?

Keep your expectations low if you intend to game on it.

No specific features in mind, I'm mainly looking for the hardware to support minor photo and video editing, but nothing too demanding. I don't intend to game on it. More than anything I just need decent all around stats and a decent battery. Mostly I will be doing work online.

Can't comment without seeing link to specific machines.

They may be quite similar.....or not.

Prices unknown.

For the XPS 13 above, see that link for specs, I haven't looked into finding a better deal yet.

I've also been considering a Lenovo thinkpad, something like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1452297072...=2047675&ssuid=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Edit: heres a specific xps 13 i might consider: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2348755933...=2047675&ssuid=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

The XPS 13 appears to be new with an i5-1230u processor; 600 dollars; Passmark single thread benchmark 2764; introduced about a year ago; 2 performance cores; 8 efficient cores

The Latitude appears to be used with no specific CPU stated other than i7 at 4.2 ghz; for 370 dollars; Passmark score unknown

Lenovo Thinkpad is used; 800 dollars; i7-9850H CPU; introduced 4 years ago; 6 cores; Passmark single thread score 2529

Knowing no more than the above, I'd probably choose the new XPS 13.

But you could be unhappy with any of them for reasons not in the specifications....keyboard feel; build quality; reliability; screen quality, etc.

Not sure why you are looking at used laptops if you can spend 800. I would think there are many other choices.

1000 dollars used.

Passmark single thread Rating: 3345

It's a bit more powerful than any of the other 3, but still used and 1000 dollars.

I wouldn't think you'd need that much CPU horsepower for ordinary use, but you know your requirements better than I do.

I'd be nervous spending 1000 on used from Ebay seller.

Suit yourself.
