Advice needed for asus RT-AC87U

OK so I bought the asus RT-AC87U I didn't realise it doesn't replace the bt home hub I have but has to be plugged into it. Which is a shame but I still want to make use of it so.

Once I have it connected do I need to get every device to connect via this instead of the hub to see improvement?

Or really do I need to get a modem to replace the hub now if so any recommendations?

For wireless connectivity, you can set the AC87U as an access point. Wired connections could still be connected to the hub. Disable the WIFI on the home hub.
