Hey guys, I asked recently whether I should get a gaming laptop or build a gaming desktop and the consensus was very much in favor of the desktop build so I'm now looking for opinions of my parts choices.
Approximate Purchase Date: Sometime this month
Budget Range: upto £1000 Before Rebates; before Shipping
System Usage from Most to Least Important:
gaming, surfing the internet, watching movies
Are you buying a monitor: No (using Samsung TV)
Parts to Upgrade: CPU/GPU/RAM/MOBO/PSU
Do you need to buy OS: No
Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Scan.co.uk
Location: Cardiff, Wales, UK
Parts Preferences: Intel Skylake, Nvidia
Overclocking: Maybe
SLI or Crossfire: Maybe
Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080
And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: My current PC is an Intel Pentium G620 (2.6ghz) with 2GB DDR3 RAM and AMD Radeon HD 6800. Suffice to say it does not run Fallout 4 well (on any settings).
I mainly want to upgrade to play games, Fallout 4/Just Cause 3/Witcher 3 etc on High to Ultra settings.
Parts:
CPU - Intel Core-I5 600K S1151 Skylake Quad Core
Mobo - Gigabyte Z170X-UD5 TH Thunderbolt 3 ATX Motherboard
GPU - Gigabyte NVIDIA GTX 970 G1 GAMING Graphics Card - 4GB
PSU - EVGA SuperNOVA 850W Modular Power Supply
RAM - Corsair 8GB DDR4 Red Vengeance LPX 2666MHz Memory Kit for Skylake
Case - IN Win GR One Full Tower Gaming Case with Side Window
Wifi Adaptor - Gigabyte Wireless Dual Band AC PCI-e Card with Bluetooth 4.0
I am hoping to dabble with overclocking for the first time with this build and want the option to upgrade to SLI in the future if needs be.
- Will all these parts work together?
- Is there anywhere I could cut back on components to save cash without affecting the performance too harshly?
- I chose the Mobo as it has Thunderbolt and USB 3.1 (C), are either of these unlikely to be useful in the long run? If so I can save cash and get a mobo with inbuilt AC wifi.
- I can't tell for sure but it seems if I want to use SLI in future the mobo should have 2x PCIE x16 slots, this MOBO only seems to have one that runs at x16, is this likely to be an issue?
- Is the cooling included with the CPU/GPU/Case likely to be enough if I'm OC'ing or do I need to splash out on extra fans?
- Are there any pre-build systems that would achieve better performance for less cost than I've come up with?
Apologies for the length of this post and thank you all so much for your time.
