Advice on Best Network Solution

I have two laptops, both dell's one brand new with one only couple years old. I have a dlink modem/router which has always worked great but is 5 years old and have just purchase new ASUS Rt-AC66 router. My question is... with the aim to optimising internet speed including downloads, what is the best set-up scenario for me to use? should I bother with a network? will it make the internet speed faster? Some people have mentioned using two routers? I'm interested on what everyone thinks is best?

You already have a 'network'.

A few questions:
1. Are you looking for wired or wireless speed?
2. What type and speed is your ISP service
3. House construction and size?

In a home environment, you almost never need "two routers".

You don't need to set up a network unless you want to share files, you don't need 2 routers unless to want to use 1 as a AP (Access point) to get a better signal say on the second floor with a Ethernet wire or homeplugs/powerline connecting them.

No That's what I thought. I honestly don't want to share files. I have bought the new computer for media streaming and basic all internet browsing etc, because my other laptop is my work and has all my important documents, files, programs etc. so i wanted to keep it very separate. I realise there is a network there but I have turned it off so that the computers currently independent. but they obviously still use the same internet connection through the same router and network connection. It is also a new connection I have had to create because of the new router but I feel the new computer is slower on the internet and downloading than the old computer and I'm not exactly sure why? I have removed the old network connection but obviously it is still there because I still use that dlink as a modem, just now have different router. Is this the reason for my slow downloads on the new computer? because the new laptop should be much faster as all hardware is superior. Would it be faster if I joined it with the old laptop as home network and made one laptop the "host"?

No. Have both machines talk directly to the router.

1. Turn off the router functions on the d-link. DHCP, firewall, ect
2. Connect the new router directly to the d-link
3. Have the laptops connect to the new one, either wired or wifi

So...the d-link is functioning just as the 'modem' (yes you need that), and the new ASUS is doing the router functions.

ok cheers. I have connected the router to the dlink and have new network connection, ip address etc but how do I turn off the router capabilities of the dlink please? and i"m thinking this will fix my problem... and unless I want both computers to talk to each other (which I don't) then there's no need to have the home sharegroup network is there? and thanks for your help
