Advice on build

I want to upgrade but the choices are dizzying. I built my current computer long ago, Core 2 duo 6320 (1.86mhz), 4 gig ram. I lost the use of my newer video card, Nvidia GT 730, upon upgrading to Win10, apparently it isn't supported.

I have 640 w Corsair power supply, 60gb SSD and a couple hard drives already. Case is a bit beat up.

  • Daughter plays light games, WoW, Minecraft, but I want to have them at their highest video quality settings and still play smooth.

I program so need some number crunching power, large Access and SQL Server databases. If you're familiar with Access, it can bring a PC to it's knees while trying to process large amounts of data.

May do some video editing, home movies.

    Dual monitors minimum
So I need MB, CPU and memory obviously. I'm not sure if I can use the video card. Single GPU.

Just have no clue what to get. I'd like to stay below $500 but will spend more to avoid bottlenecks. I'm guessing 8GB memory minimum?

I want USB 3.? for fast external data transfer (or are there better alternatives that are common?).

I can upgrade my LG775 MB with a much faster processor but I'm guessing moving to the newer i3/5/7 would yield much more noticeable speed gains and be worth the extra expense. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I would like to have a smaller MB form factor, have an ATX currently. I will stay with that size if needed for the video card.

Do people even use sound cards anymore?

not many do, no

since most newer motherboards have very good built in sound
