Advice on first build in years

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Last computer I built was five years ago, an AMD 64 rig. Ended up dying about two years ago and I’ve been using my school laptop ever since. This thing is a piece of junk but I haven’t had the time to play games or anything so I lived with it. However, I’m done with school now and looking to build a computer so that I can game again and watch HD movies and what not. I’ve done a little research but I’m not exactly sure if my build is adequate or if there are better or cheaper parts out there. If anyone has any suggestions on items that can help push the price down without sacrificing quality or performance then they would be greatly appreciated. Not taking into MIRs or bundles, the price stands at $1234.90 right now.

I would add a WD 640GB Black HDD & use your old 500 as a seconady drive or use in an external encloser. Everything else looks good to me.

You couldn't have made the best choice for gaming with an Intel Core i7 920 build.

But just to expand your choice, you can also build an Intel Core 2 Quad or AMD Phemon II X4 setup that can complete with an Intel Core i7 machine.

Hey guys, thanks for all the great feedback. It's very much appreciated. I should have mentioned that I intend to go with the Win 7 beta to save money. I've got a few more questions that I could use help with, though.

My brother has gone through a few EVGA boards in his comp right now so I was leaning towards staying away from them with my build but I'm not against going with them. I'll be honest. Of all the items I'm out of date on, mobos are probably at the top of that list.

So in that regards, how would you guys compare the mobo suggested by Why_Me and the regular Asus p6t?

That Asus board you have listed is good for Crossfire only. The Gigabyte is Crossfire and SLI. As far as cases go, the Cooler Master has much more room to work with as far as cable management, room for a decent heat sink, and dual vid cards.
