EDIT: I should really have said before - I'm planning on mainly running Linux on this with Steam and other native games. If my son really starts complaining I might get a new drive to boot windows from in future, but am planning on not installing it to start with...

Hi - I know this must be a well-worn path, but our iMac just blew up and I have been thinking about building a gaming machine with my son for the first time. At present he basically just plays Minecraft but
would like some other games. I feel very new to the whole PC world, but have used linux and various HPC environments remotely for quite a while for various things - just never got my hands dirty!
I have read lots of reviews/posts etc, and have come up with this as a possible build list: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/mqCJhy
In addition to gaming for the kids, I'd like to use the computer for my work in the evening (mostly simulation runs in R, and mostly not GPU accelerated now although some of the packages I use have this planned or in progress). We'd also like to do family stuff like edit RAW photos in darktable. We have a library of about 300gb right now. At present I have a remotely hosted seedbox running Plex, but I guess I could buy some big drives for this machine and use it for that too...
We're on a reasonable budget and, in particular, I'm thinking the graphics card might be overkill, and possibly that the monitor is going to be a disappointment after coming from the iMac 27inch.
Any thoughts much appreciated!
All the best,
B
