Hi,

Been quite a while since I've visited here but have always found excellent help and advice.

I'm currently looking at my storage options and considering investing in a NAS for my home, mainly to use as a media server and back up server as I've had several HDs fail on me and lost a lot of data.

I'm really not quite sure how my setup works atm and therefore, not sure what the best solution is for me. Please forgive the long post...It's kind of complicated and I'll do my best to explain below.

Current Setup in living room:

Hardware
Windows 7 HTPC with around 9TB Storage across 5 internal HDDs (mainly large 1080p/720p MKVs and around 250GB of music in MP3/Flac format)
Oppo BDP 103D (main media player) hooked up to Home Theater System
Nexus 9 as main remote

Software
XBMC/Kodi for MKVs (installed on both PC and Nexus 9 - I can send files on the PC to the Oppo via DLNA through the Nexus so very convenient)
Foobar2000 for music (Foobar Remote on Nexus controls PC which outputs via HDMI to the Oppo)

This all works well right now but I'd also like to access my media files when I travel on the Nexus, share my files with my family (photos etc) and eventually when I move to a bigger place be able to send media files to two or more rooms simultaneously.

Most MKVs are still Rar'd and XBMC/Kodi media server is great as I don't need to unrar before sending them on the Oppo. Trying to play a Rar'd file from the Oppo's network interface doesn't work, plus the interface is slow and clunky.

I was therefore considering a NAS to store all the Media in one location in a RAID 5 array and was looking at the Synergy DS1513+ or DS1515+ which I believe will allow me to do the following:
- allow XMBC/Kodi on the HTPC or Nexus to push files to any other DLNA player on the network (essentially making the Nexus a remote control for all players)
- allow Foobar on HTPC to play music from the NAS to the Oppo
- allow music to be accessed by other devices in other rooms
- allow me to access photos/music via private cloud and share with family overseas
- prevent data loss due to RAID 5 (would also backup core data such as Photos etc on the PC or external HD)

Would the 1515+ be a good choice for what I am aiming to do and would it be able to all of the above?

Would it be overkill and the DS415play be enough? I'm leaning towards Synergy rather than Netgear or QNAP due to the reviews of both hardware and software.

Scalability is also a factor so am willing to spend a bit more for a 5 bay drive to have the flexibility to build this up to 20-30TB in the future.

Are there any other good options to consider?

Thanks for reading if you managed to get to this far and understand it! Any input or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Solution
You PC is overkill for what you want.

Plex server can use any disk to store data and then just add the folder as a library.

As for RAR's that will be the job of file shares and backups can be setup using Windows own solution.
Go for a low power quad core AMD APU 3Ghz+, 8 port sata3 motherboard, 8GB of ram and 1 x 64GB SSD, Raid10 4x2TB+ WD purple or red HDDs or even blue if you disable spindown.

Install your O/S (Server2012 R2 Std my choice )+ Plex server and stream basically any file format to PC's, iPhone, Android, TV's

Thanks for quick reply. I was thinking of going down that route but to be honest, I'd probably prefer an out of the box solution to the storage side that just does it all...getting a bit lazy for new builds...space is another concern, mainly the wife's!

Current PC has an I7 4790, Sabretooth Z79, 16GB ram and the case is a full tower Lian Li with space for another 4 drives if I fill it up (just recounted and there are 7 drives in there already (1xSSD and 6x3.5 drives with total of 12TB - and there's only 2 TB left!

Had never really heard of Plex before so if i simply install that on the PC (which is on all the time) and added an internal RAID set up (would need a PCI card to add more Sata ports), would that work just as well or in that case should I just go for a NAS instead of completely packing the PC case?

Also just read that Plex does not support RARs which for me would be a dealbreaker. The thread was abut 6 months old so support might have been added again.

I'll give it a try though to find out if it will work.
