Advice on non-gaming PC build

Hello all. I was wondering what would be a good setup for a work/home PC. I will be doing some video editing/dvd burning, picture editing, music editing, and alot of web surfing with minimal gaming. I already have a monitor,keyboard, and mouse. I want to keep it around 1k. Thanks in advance.

Purchase date is ASAP.

3- Mobo: Gigabeyt mobo p35 $100
4- CPU: Intel C2 q6600 $180
5- RAM: Kingston value ram DDR-2 800 4 Gigs $50

8- Hard drive: 500GB Hitachi $80

The prices are just estemits, but I should not be off by much, give or take 10%
 
Well the specs am giving will be a overkill but it will last you easy for 3 to 4 yrs without any upgrades...

For a computer that won't be used for gaming, you could save $100 or more by just going with a cheap video card, like 4650.

For that editing more memory would help, so double up on that gskill kit.

I am astounded how people could suggest you introduce a crapload of heat, noise and power for a non gaming rig and call it 'future proof'?? My suggestion at $568.94 with $7.59 shipping before rebates:

Batchuka have you ever recommended anything but an AMD build? Take off your blinders. Intel quads are better than AMD's, especially for video/audio editing and rendering. The above suggested system will not be significantly hotter than that system you suggested. You left some key components out of your build to make it look cheaper than the intel one. The intel system has much more options for future expansion as well, yours does not, and the intel one is a far better system.
 
Its insane to suggest using a 4870 in a non-gaming machine .

Batchuka has a very good point about noise heat and power consumption .

In a few days Toms will publish the $1250 system builder marathon . That machine is likely to be Ci7 which is a clear winner at encoding , If you drop out whatever hard core gaming card they suggest and install a 4670 or similar it will be pretty close to ideal for the OP

The Pll will be a little slower but has advantages of clocking to very low speeds compared to any intel when it can . Over time it may be the better choice based on usage patterns . If you are just surfing then having a C2Q or Ci7 sucking power might not be the best plan
 
All video cards nowadays will support two monitors, so no worries there. Pay attention to the kind of signal input you need, DVI or D-sub. If the monitor or card has a different interface you may need to buy a converter to make it work.
 
TheKid: can you not see that TH is an Intel fanboi site and someone has to contribute alternative build ideas? I totally disagree about P2 being inferior for the $$ - you do configs your way and i would do mine my way? What key components may i ask? GF8300 IGP not 'up to it' for CPU bound applications? Outside of wasting time and shooting other's configs if you have a better one at the same price point do share for the benefit of others? Then again looking at your sig and comments when addressing budget systems anything outside an i7 is not up to scratch? Stop being elitist and respect opinions that differ from your own - you dun see me shooting down other peoples suggestions because they are Intel based do you? FYI: it *is* cheaper than an Intel quad rig and no i did not make it 'look' as such because i do up both Intel and AMD rigs for others - do you?
