Hi. Im working on upgrading my PC, specs are as follows
PSU: Antec 750w gold truepower classic (have Asus Rog strix 750w arriving. Antec is old and not modular, and also with new case arriving, i want a clean build.)
MB: Gigabyte B360M HD3
CPU: Intel i5 8400
RAM: Kingston HyperX 2x8 2666Mhz, running Dual channel
GPU: RTX 3060Ti(bought it for 850eu, sold my 2060 for 450 instantly, quite happy with this deal)
Im running games at 3440x1440 resolution, newer AAA titles(FC6, Valhalla, even FS22) and have no problem getting over 60fps, but there are dips here and there, 1% and 0.1% lows i guess.
Now id like to eliminate that, and i have some more money to throw around.. ive been looking at 11th and 12th gen processors, particularly 12600k, as its just 35e more than 11600k in my country, and i want K cpu for possible OC.
Id also need a new mobo, been looking at some Gigabyte Z690 board.
Im looking at close to 600e for cpu and mobo, and 100-150 more if i should buy new RAM sticks, like 3600mhz or so.
So, is it worth it, performance wise? What would you do?
I feel like im being let down by cpu, it did great but i feel like its time to upgrade after 4 or so years, but not if there is only gonna be a marginal improvement.
Looking forward to your suggestions, thanks.

In an age of poor GPU availability, I wouldn't get an F sku, unless you have spare GPU's for troubleshooting, or using the system in case your 3060ti dies. The 12500 isn't much more than the 12400, and has a 500mhz faster base clock, 200mhz faster turbo clock, and better IGP, for only 15 euro more.

I hope it doesnt come to that, no component died on me to this day thankfully. Thanks for all suggestions, ill check prices and components and get back to you. Main question tho.. anything u guys suggested should be a vast improvement over what i have now(gaming performance wise)?

The IPC gains are definitely a vast improvement, plus your current chip lacks HT, where the newer 12th i5's have. The 12400 is consistently faster than a 9900k, which is the limit of your current platform, and with your board, a 9900k would probably suffer from lower clocks, due to the poor VRM configuration, for such a high wattage chip. Also the 12400/12500 consume much less power, for said performance.

Your current cpu ... 8th gen w/6 cores, no hyperthreading and natively supports 2666mhz memory.

i5 12400/12400F is a 12th gen cpu with 6 cores / 12 threads that natively supports 3200mhz memory.

4K is extremely demanding even on a 3060Ti, assuming no GPU bottleneck, yes you would benefit from a 12600K. The 8400 will struggle to maintain a smooth 60FPS in some titles. However you say you get over 60FPS, I wouldn't bother trying to run higher, I would cap your frame rate at 60 FPS. It would help reduce the difference between your frame times.

Its not 4k, ultrawide 1440p. I wanted to go 4k, but i ultimately decided to go for ultrawide 1440p from 1440p. I do get over 60 fps, its just those occasional dips that frustrate me.

Oh right yes, even 1440p Ultrawide though is very demanding. I've tried 6C/6T, an 8400 will stutter a bit in some of the more recent AAA's. When the GPU is not bottlenecked, a more powerful CPU will provide a smoother more enjoyable experience. If for example, you find your game lagging, it doesn't feel so great, but MSI Afterburner is telling you your GPU is running some way below 100%. Then absolutely a 12600K will fix that.

MB: Asus TUF B660M-PLUS D4 199€ https://www.asus.com/Motherboards-Components/Motherboards/TUF-Gaming/TUF-GAMING-B660M-PLUS-D4/
CPU: 12400f for 205€ or 12500 for 245€
RAM: Corsair Vengeance pro 2x16gb DDR4 3600, CL18 170€
That's 575 or 615 if i go with 12500. Both have coolers included. I deviated from my OP, but this way i get RAMs included for 600€, not just mobo+cpu. I may not get to OC cpu, but whatever.

And based on what u all said, this would be a great improvement over what i have. Any thoughts?

Yes the 12400 is a huge improvement over what you already have, around 60% in single core and double the multi core.. I wouldn't bother with the 12500, it's 19% more for 4.5% more performance, I would step up to the 12600K instead. If you can afford the latter I think it's worth it, otherwise the 12400 is a good CPU and you've picked a good quality board.
