Hi all,
I am looking to upgrade some internal components in my build soon and was hoping to get some advice on what to do. I use my PC primarily for gaming, so that's the focus here. I'll note that I've recently been getting into some VR gaming as well. The only thing off the table is the GPU. I am currently running an RTX 2080, so I feel like I am good there for a little while.
Here is my current setup:

CPU: Intel Core i5-8600k; MOBO: ASUS Prime Z370-A ;GPU: Nvidia RTX 2080; RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 2133MHz ; Storage: 500GB Samsung SSD (I also have other internal and external drives)

Thanks!

the 8600k is most certainly outdated and a bottleneck for the 2080.

Your motherboard cpu and ram combination is actually still worth quite a chunk of money, id say with a bit of luck you can still get 220-250 dollars for it on used market.

Most logical upgrade that doesnt break the bank would currently be a 12th gen i5 12400f in combination with a b660 motherboard, though b660 is fairly new and theres not many options or videos on VRM performance yet i believe, so you wanne make sure the VRM can handle the i5's full speed. Add 16 gigs of ram to that with a minimum speed of 3200 mhz , a decent cooler for the 12400f like the arctic i35 and with abit of luck you're down only like 200-225 bucks for a massive increase in cpu power , ram speed and a great combination for your 2080

Thanks, Jeremy. Anyone have thoughts on upgrading my cpu to an intel i5-12600k? I would need to upgrade my mobo as well then, though I am not interested in going the DDR5 route right now given the insane pricing.

I dont know a ton about motherboards but I know asus is known for good bios, quality, and looks. Asus prime z690 ddr4 is $220
Asus was a good company about 10 years ago now they sell mostly overpriced boards with gimmick software to people that don't know better.

Most of the time you can buy a board that uses better parts for less money from another manufacture.

i don't know how big a bump your looking for or how many bucks you want to spend but if you replaced the ram with 3200 2x8 or 2x16 it would help move things along.

Wait a few weeks for the B660 DDR4 boards to show up on US hardware sites. These boards in the links down below should retail for right around $150 if I had to guess.

What is your budget?

Your i5-8600K has 6 threads and a passmark rating of 10179 and a single thread rating of 2613.
Have you done any overclocking?
Run a cpu-Z bench test and see what your single thread rating is:
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-8565U+@+1.80GHz&id=3308
I like to focus on single thread performance because that seems to be most important for games.

12600K is a massive upgrade that goes for about $300.
It has 16 threads and a rating of 23949/3946.
A more budget friendly upgrade would be the i5-11400 for $200 or so with 12 threads and a rating of 17139/3051

You can find a number of lga1700 ddr4 motherboards in the $200 range.
I would opt for a Z690 ddr4 based motherboard if you go the 12600K route.

You can reuse your DDR4 ram with no performance penalty.

What is your cpu cooler?
LGA1700 mounting is a bit different and you would need an adapter.
Most vendors are offering them for gratis or a modest price.

Thank you for your comments! I have a decent amount of room in my budget. I've purchased the i5-12600k and a Z690 ddr4 motherboard already. As for the cooler, I just bought a Noctua NH-U12A. I am happy to see your note that I can reuse my DDR 4 ram without penalty. I thought that was another upgrade I might have to pursue.
