Didn't know whether to put this in CPU or heatsinks...anyway couple of questions. I'm getting a AMD Athlon 64 4000+. I was wondering what the differences between the Sledgehammer and Clawhammer cores are.

Also, is the stock heatsink good enough, or should I buy a heatsink?

As far as I know Sledgehammer was the codename for the 130nm Opteron CPUs while Clawhammers werer the 130nm Athlon64 cores that had 1MB L2 cache. (well more specifically I guess C0 stepping; there were some 512K L2 cache chips that were half cache disabled Claws)

stock heatsinks are good enough if you're not an ambitious overclocker. Pretty silent and good enough for some mild overclocking.

Thank you for your post. I was about to start a new thread asking exactly the question you answered. I'm about to put together a new system with an Athlon 64 3700+ and my son - who know everything, by the way - told me that NO ONE uses the heatsink and fan from the retail box.

Love your sig by the way, although it pretty much goes without saying.

Regards,

farno

So I got me a pen and paper And I made up my own little sign</pre><p></font color=red>

As a general rule if you are questioning whether to go stock or not then you should go stock. The custom heatsinks are very important if you are trying to outgun Mozz in your overclock, but if you don't "know" if you need it or not, then the chances are you don't overclock like that, and don't need the extra cooling. Although if you decide you want to try the extreme OCing ways let Mozz know and maybe he will show you his setup.

Used to be true, especially in the Athlon/XP days. But AMD vastly improved the stock HSFs of its A64s, and more over, these cpu's run pretty cool so it doesn't require an uber cooler to achieve good temps at reasonable soundlevels.

How would he be better off with a FX53? The 4000+ is <$500, the FX53 is well, not.

He's right. No one I know uses the Retail HSF for anything other than a completely stock machine. It doesn't mean you can't use it, it just means most people that overclock don't use it.
