Hello Tom's Hardware regulars!

My alias is BrainlessAnt, and today, I have a humble request for advice/opinions from the more experienced readers.
My current rig a.k.a Trefyes (yes...The rig has a name) has recently hit his 4th Buildday (The Day that I scream "ITS ALIVE!!!") !

I feel that it is time for an upgrade/new rig. My question is that is Trefyes worth the effort/time/money to upgrade or should I just go for Trefyes 2.0?

I mainly use the rig as a gaming platform, and I would want my rig to run graphic intensive games smoothly at the highest setting.
Games like The Witcher 3, GTA 5, Fallout 4, Heavily modded Skyrim (honestly...who doesn't mod the crap out of this game) etc.

Trefyes' system;
Mobo: ASRock P67 EXTREME4 (B3) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel
Processor: Intel core i5-2500k CPU @ 3.30 GHz
*GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 560TI
PSU: PSU CORSAIR PSU-750TX 750W RT
*Ram: 4Gx2|GSKILL F3-12800CL8D-8GBXM
*Monitor display resolution: 1680x1050
Memory: Western Digital Black WD5002AALX 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

I would like to get away with just upgrading the GPU (980Ti...Drool much), the ram to 16GB and the monitor display resolution to 2560x1440.
However, I do not have enough experience to know whether the Mobo/processor would hinder the rig to run the graphic intensive games smoothly at the highest settings.
I would like to hear some of ya'll thoughts/opinion/advice.

Much appreciate the time.

Cheers,
BrainlessAnt

That CPU is still more then powerfull enough. You can get away with upgrading the GPU as your PSU is good. Why are you upgrading the ram? most of the time 8GB is plenty. As someone who has 16GB Its hard to get over 6GB of usage.

Treyfes' CPU, Mobo, and PSU look solid. Are there better processors on the market? Yes. Is the performance increase you'll gain worth the price? Not likely.

I'd start by replacing the GPU to at least a GTX 960. Also, if you don't have a SSD it may be time to make that investment. Samsung and Crucial offer really great products at very competitive prices.

He said he wants to grab a 980TI 😛

You should be fine with just upgrading the GPU and Monitor. Even 8GB of RAM isn't a critical problem. The 2500K is still a very respectable processor. It might be worth considering the Kaby Lake cycle though. Once USB 3.1, and M.2 drives are a bit more mainstream and the 100 series motherboards come down a bit in price, the extras combined with modest CPU improvements make a more compelling upgrade.

If u want to make a bigger investment, check if ur cpu cooler and mobo is good enough for an OC, buy a nicer GPU and ur back in business.
ohyeah, and if ur a gamer and not an graphics designer don't buy the extra RAM, it is faster rendering vids and stuff but that's it.

Thanks everyone ! Trefyes gonna get ripped up with the new sets of muscles (gpu) and eyes (monitor).
I have the CoolerMaster Hyper 101.
I might want to buy a 2nd fan to attach on the other side of the heat sink.

So my buy list;
GPU
Monitor display
2nd fan.

I'll ponder on what to get for my buy list...But thanks for convincing me to upgrage Trefyes instead of its counterpart 2.0 !!!

Edit: I'll come bump my thread back up if I need some assistance for the buy list...For now, its time to scour the web for deals...😀

Edit2: Argh, I can't find the replacement fan clip for the 2nd fan !!! out of stock🙁
