I am building a new computer with these components:

gigabyte 8I915PL-G
P4 630 800fsb
2 crucial 512mb
sapphire radeon x300se
maxtor 40gb ata133
sony cdrw
fujiplus 17" lcd
possibly an Antec slk1650b case 350w ps
future upgrade to p4 830
no overclocking

My question is this enough power for the above system? Do I need a case with a side air duct?

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

It would prbably work, but I would want a little more buffer room. The Sonata can be gotten at CompUSA for $60 after rebates right now. It has a 380W PSU. Another option is the Sonata II for right around $128 with a 450W PSU. I think you'll be happy with either of these options.

thanks Rugger!!!!

I realize that Antec is a really good case but are there any other cases at NewEgg.com or TigerDirect.com that would be almost as good.

I agree with you on having a bigger power supply. So I want to go with 400w or 450w, but the prices of Antec are out of my budget.

Try the Super Flower 201B. I'm probably the 200,014 person to recommend it, here, at THGC.

I haven't tried it myself, but many believe it's as good as the Lian Li's and Antec's of the world. Well, for the price, it's a steal. I'd get it in a heartbeat. Here is the link: http://www.directron.com/201b.html

As for a PSU, check out Fortron. The (true) 400W class is adequate for your system.

Rethink the PSU. Check out the review TOMs did recently. The Seasonic that they reviewed is the one I would get.

What are you using the system to do? What Apps? Is that a board with the 915 chipset?

ASUS P5WD2 Premium

XMS2 DDR2 @ 1180Mhz

SuperPI 25secs

It is a 915 chipset.

Use it for email and web page creation.

Programs: xp, office standard, security suite,
photo editor and web page creator.

Would you recommend any case and psu combo?

Honestly, I wouldnt even think about a combo with a socket 775 system. They require to much power. Are you at your budget limit? If possible, I would get the 925X chipset or even better the 955.

One more thing. If you plan on upgrading to a dual core you will need the 955 chipset.

With his stated usage I don't think he needs dual core. You're right about the power. I was thinking AMD - he could probably get away with the Sonata II in a low-mid range AMD system.

Max: A good case/psu suggestion for you would be
1. <A HREF="http://www.directron.com/201tblk.html" target="_new">Super-Flower SF-201T</A> for $72.99 + s/h
2. <A HREF="http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=270402" target="_new">Enermax 535W Whisper II model EG565P</A> for $91.50

If I go to an Abit AL8-V 945P, what psu power do I need? Will 400W be enough? And will this be enough power when I upgrade to the Pentium D?

I like to have a beefier PSU, then I absolutely need. It makes upgrades go smoother, whether the upgrade is expected like yours to DC or unexpected to another HDD or better GPU. I still like that Enermax EG565P that I linked. I think it has one of the best price/perf ratios for PSUs right now.
