I planning to upgrade either the cpu or gpu on my current setup. But dont know which one should i upgradd first. Yes, i only can afford to upgrade them one by one so dont tell me to upgrade multiple or too expensive/overpowered unit. Tho u can suggest future upgrade can be done step by step.

My current setup:

Phenom ii x4 955 be
Msi 970a mobo
Gtx 750ti
Corsair vs550
Ssd
Hddx3
Corsair vengeance lp 4gx2

Ideally, you should be looking at these parts (as a target/goal in your upgrade):

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Motherboard: ASRock - AB350 Pro4 ATX AM4 Motherboard ($83.98 @ Newegg)

Total: $421.85

Most recommend leaving the AM3+ platform (as it is already end-of-life/has a dead-end upgrade path) and migrating to current platforms such as the AMD AM4 (Ryzen) platform or the Intel LGA1151 (7th-gen) platform. This depends on your budget for the first batch of upgrades.

Although you can just upgrade the CPU (solely) keeping the AM3+ plaform but, IMO, it would not be worth it as you will be limited in CPU selection and max. possible performance it can offer.

There would also be no point in upgrading to more powerful GPUs if the CPU/platform would hinder the GPUs max. possible performance, so, I would follow common recommendations of changing your platform to give you the opportunity to upgrade to more powerful components in the future.

However, note that you can't really do a piece-by-piece (single item) upgrade based on your parts you listed, if you wish to change platforms. It will definitely a batch (multiple item) upgrade.

Recommended first batch would be changing CPU + MB + RAM (or CPU + MB + RAM + PSU).
Recommended second batch would be changing GPU + PSU (or GPU, if PSU can be included in the first batch of upgrades).

As to which specific models, depends on your budget for such batch of upgrades.

Maybe i should say, possible upgrade for this am3+ line up. Yes i know its quite old generation but the upgrades for intel is too expensive while ryzen is also still quite expensive right now in my country.

So im thinking about going for fx6300 or gtx1050ti. U might wanna say its not a great value for money purchase but im going after used units so its going to be cheaper.

Thoughts?

the fx 6300 is a significant bottleneck with that GPU. its not that it isnt a great value, its that its terrible and not really an upgrade, its more of a side-grade. It would help with your current bottleneck on your 750ti but that's about it. There is no real gain in buying an old outdated CPU.

Depending on how much these parts actually costs in your location, you can save a few bucks by getting 8GB (2 x 4GB) instead or opt for a Ryzen 5 1400 (4-core/8-thread) or even a Ryzen 3 1300X (4-core/4-thread) as alternatives - all of which are SIGNIFICANTLY better than the FX 6300 you are considering.

Another very affordable option is going for an Intel Pentium build (still significantly better than the FX 6300) and should pair very well with a GTX 1050 Ti you are considering for the GPU:

CPU: Intel - Pentium G4560 3.5GHz Dual-Core Processor ($70.88 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Asus - PRIME B250M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($65.99 @ Amazon)
Memory: Crucial - Ballistix Sport LT 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory ($69.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $206.86

Hmm, after thinking for many days i dont think i can go ryzen with my budget. But i do consider changing to intel's older generation, like 2nd-4th, cos the other kinda still abit expensive. What do u guys think if i go like the i5 2500, i heard so many good things about the cpu. I think it can run better compared to fx6300 or even the fx8k series.
