After Clean Windows install, VERY slow boot times

I did a complete reformat and clean install of Windows Home Premium 64bit, followed by installing all updated drivers for the chipset, the motherboard, the GPU, keyboard, mouse & monitor. I installed all Windows updates and at the end installed Command Center (for thermal controls with the Alienware case and Master I/O).

After completing all of this, I am still experiencing VERY slow boot times (takes over 15mins to reach the desktop). Also, my Alienware Command Center is not working and is giving me an error, which I will post tomorrow as I'm not at my PC right now. but that could be due to many issues and I will try re-installing it after I uninstall the current app.

My main question is, what is the best way to find out what is causing the boot delay? The "starting Windows," screen pauses the entire way and it takes at least 10-15mins just for the Windows logo to form together. So, I'm wondering if there is a log or a way I can see any startup/boot errors or all of the boot-up events. Also, I have tried unplugging USB devices and that does not seem to help my times at all.

I should add that once the PC reaches the desktop and I'm up and running, there does not seem to be any lag and everything seems to work perfectly normal. So, I assume something is either installed incorrectly or something is incompatible and I just want to find the issue. Any advice would be appreciated as always.

Thanks guys!

If I would take an educated guess, the problem is most likely your HDD.
My gf's computer takes about as long if not more to boot up and the HDD is dying.
So it still works and is fine in normal usage, but the boot takes forever.

Did not identify if HDD is SATA II (F3) or Sata III (F4). NO real benifit in sata III HDDs - More a marketing ploy, But if Sata III then connect to SATA III port (Does improve burst rate, but that is all).

(2) IS your Bios set to AHCI, Recommended unless you are using 2 drives in a raid setup.

(3) With The HDD on Intel Sata II or SATA III, did you down load and install the latest Intel RST Driver (10.6)

-After install of Win 7, and allowing windows to update, - NO driver installs, No 3rd party installs, What was the Boot-to-windows time. If it was fine, then probable a driver problem, If Not then either setup incorrect or Problem with HDD.

thanks for the responses guys.

@RetiredChief- I will look into this a bit later, as you have brought up some very good points and being that you have the same MOBO, you may be on the right track. I'll report back as soon as I take a look. I really appreciate your help though. Thanks!

Once changing the 2 above problems, I am having issues with windows working correctly now. Keeps asking me to repair, but the system is MUCH MUCH faster after those 2 changes. Maybe I should just do a clean install again?

Might have a problem with a lsft over setting in the windows registry.
I fresh install should correct.

Before you do that. down load As SSD (although its designed for an SSD I think it willo run on a HDD. Do not need to run the benchmark, just open it and see what driver it shows. (upper left). If You have installed the Intel RST it should show iastor, if not then msahci. If it shows pcide, = BAD. But that can be corrected with a registry edit and reboot.

Unfortunately, I'm not able to even get into Windows at this point as one of the updates installed only half way and the error is preventing me from even doing a system restore. I had just done the clean install, so doing it again does not bother me that much as long as everything works. I'll leave all of that for tomorrow. Also, I'm seeing some high temps in the BIOS. Mobo = 33, but CPU =76. I'm using the liquid cooling that comes with the Area-51 case, but maybe an exhaust fan in the back will help? I'm not sure why it is running so hot. The cooling and other fan are both on full speed, so I'll have to look into that as well. I will report back after my reinstall tomorrow. I appreciate the help and advice though. Anything else I should know about this mobo? The BIOS is extremely laggy when I'm in it. Using the mouse is almost impossible and keyboard is just as bad. Is this normal?

(1) Try doing a "bios "optimized". Then verify that the HDD contol is still set to AHCI.
(2) Are you running the latest Bios revision?? Added - latest is 1.60
(3) do not use the "install" now, use custom install and on the page that asked where to install, 1st DELETE all Partitons then select the UNPartitioned drive to install to, But change the size to say 200->400 Gigs. You can wait to initalize and format the remainer of the HDD untill satisfied with windows setup, then use windows disk management to set up the rest of the drive.

1. How do I perform "bios optimized," to verify that AHCI is set?
2. I can verify that the bios is 1.60. I have checked that multiple times now.
3. I will use the custom install again and change the size of the partition once both are deleted.

We'll see how it goes in the morning. Sorry if these are more or less n00b questions, but this is the first first build, so running into problems was definitely expected.

thanks again!

It's called Load default values and is found on the exit and save screen.
I generally read thru the manual on bios selections to get a feel for what the default values are. If You do load the default, I would double check the HDD to insure it is set to AHCI (71), and for the memory I normally select to use XMP profile 1 ( Pg 62) (I'm Using DDR3-1600 CL7 @ 1.60 V)

More familar with the Gigiabyte bios (1) slection for "Load Optimized Defaults" and "Load Fail-Safe Defaults"

OK, I have seen that, i didn't know if that's what you meant or not. I'll look into it and read up more on it so I understand what I'm doing in the first place.. I'll be back with more questions tomorrow during the install I'm sure..haha.

Thanks for all the help!

I experience such slow Windows 7 install times with this MOBO. I have floppy support disabled, set to AHCI and HDD is connected via SATAII. The install on this PC takes around 3-4hours and that is way too long. Did you run into any issues like this?

I have read on other forums that people experienced very slow install times and the fix was to disable all floppy options. I only see one option in the BIOS, and that is disabled. Any other ideas?

Thanks,

First, NO and I have 3 Samsung HDDs (All SATA II F3). Question which model, Myself prefer the F3 over the F4.
An no to problems with the EXTREME 4 installation of 2 HDDs and a SSD and Blu-ray drive.

I think the first thing is to rule out the HDD itself.
(1) Do you have a 2nd HDD that you could try ??
(3) Download the Samsung HDD utility (Bootable CD)
Make sure you download the CD ver, not the FDD ver. In zipped format, unzip to a ISO file. NOTE can not do a direct copy, must use the ISO funtion of cd burning program.
See: http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/downloads/support_in_es.html

OK, I'll check that utility out. I have 3 other HDDs, but they all have data that I need and want to install those on this system as well, so I'll have to wait and see how this goes first. I'll let the install complete for now and look into all of this afterwards.

There is definitely something setup wrong as everything seems so slow for a pretty good system. I can't understand it.

Is that also something I have to burn to disk or is that through the Bios? Again, this is my first build, so learning as I go unfortunately.. Thanks for your help (and patience!). I bet you would've had this sucker up and running days ago...haha.

Hey Chief,

I have downloaded and burnt both the ES-Tool and the UBCD. I am currently installed the drivers and windows updates and afterwards, I will try these utilities and see what I come up with. Also, is there a log for the boot times that I can pull that might show errors or why the system keeps hanging during boot? Anything else you can think of-diagnostic wise or other, would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks again for all of you time and help.

Awesome, I'll try these too.. I'm just finishing up the drivers now. I wish the boot problem would go away because once I'm in Windows, the PC is flying... after I complete all the driver install I'll use those two utility CDs, then I'll also enable the boot logging.

Thanks again, you're a HUGE help!

So, here's a quick update. After finishing all drivers and will still installing Windows updates (as the OS disk that came with the PC is somewhat old I guess), I'm still having issues with slow boot times, but the PC is very stable once in Windows. I now am seeing more normal temps (CPU 45, MOBO 33) so I am confident that once this boot issue is solved, I may be on to having a decent setup. I did enable boot logging and I will look for the log file now. I am happy with the way things are looking up right now though..

(1) remove your Antivitus software (SuperAntiSpyware) and try. If by change that is doing it the use uSoft Security Suite - pretty good.

(2) On Drivers not found, I would do a google search.
IE
Found this: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/delay-on-boot-due-to-multiple-attempts-to-install/65bca615-9e03-444a-8d41-5e526b958c73
My solution was : I found that the INF files pointing to these Driver Files and its dependencies - had a few paths that did not resolve. In short : paths were invalid and the driver files themselves are not present in these paths. This is because they were actually on a harddrive that I disconnected - so I reconnected it back (its not a bootable drive and doesnt not have MBR or any OS in it) and startup was back to normal (3 seconds).

However, in your cases, you need to get Autoruns for Windows http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx - it's a simple tool that exactly tells you what drivers are loaded at boottime in what order and where the files are. Then you have 2 options :

•Fix the paths of the non-loaded drivers
•Disable them if you don't need them (disabling important drivers like graphics card and harddisk and CDROM will FlusterCuck your machine up for good) so better -
•Fix them by finding the missing files or -
•Reinstalling them from their vendor again.

Verify that the drivers exist in the correct "path" (ie the VGA.sys)

(3) Might run a Registy cleaner such as CCleaner.
