After many ticks and tocks, in doubt for the first time in 6 years (i5-2500k)

So....this is primarily about gaming....am 40 yo, started gaming on the Atari (Pong lol), then C64, then 386dx40....and now, for 6 years already (main components):

- Antec 1200 v1
- Intel i5 2500k @ 4.6 GHz (Zalman 9700 cooler) - no voltmods
- Gigabyte main board - irrelevant, does the trick upto 5GHz with ease
- OCZ 750W PSU
- 2 x 4GB CAS 9 DDR3
- 1 x 250GB SSD, 5 x HDD

Last year I changed my GTX 970 for a GTX 1070

Uptil now, I haven't had a game I couldn't play at (Ultra) High settings (current games - Far Cry Primal, Doom, NBA 2K17, Assasin's Creed Origins, Senua's Revenge - online: World of Warships)....with hitting the desired fps (running only FHD, no need for 4K or VR).

To cut a long story short....I have the fps, I have the temps (I love the Antec case - if upgrading I would go for the TT View 71 (pwetty RGB), which would probably not be as temp efficient when it comes to airflow)

Should I go Coffee Lake....I see full i5-2500k systems (with lesser parts) getting sold for a mere 200-300 euro (FULL systems - I would keep my drives, my PSU, and my GPU)...upgrade with case, i5 8600k, Strix Mainboard, 16GB DDR4 and a Noctua air CPU cooler would be about 950 euro....watercooling extra 300 euro or some

Is it worth it yet? Or should I resist upgrading one more generation?

PS: it has been itching for several years to build a new system....just want to check whether you guys think it's THE time

thanks !

Solution
Is it worth upgrading? Yes your gaining about 40% on the low FPS with a newer 8XXX chip, but if what you have works for you now why not wait till next year. Intel/AMD/Nvidia are all releasing new products later this year into next, PCIe-4.0 and DDR5 are due to show up late 2019.

It's time. I have the 4690K and I can see myself at that point in 3 years or less. While the 2500 Oc'd heavily can still compete with today's games, as you've seen and remarked on, it was handed its hat at Coffee Lake's release if not before. The 8700K is my recommendation. I've had the 2500K and the 4690K. Next time I will opt for an i7 or higher end AMD CPU. I've also had the 970.

but have since upgraded to the 1080 Ti.

Thanks for the answer ! Personally - for gaming - I would not go i7....certainly not while the much cheaper i5-8600k is already a hexacore.
Still....as said, I have the fps - I know the Coffee's finally are CPU's that can kick my Sandy Bridge's bridges....but 120 fps or 68 (eg) is not a reason for me to let this rig go for peanuts....and my soul...lol.
I need GOOD reasons ! :)

I'd say either wait for Pinnacle Ridge which is coming in april. Or buy the i7 8700k now.
Yes, i'd recommend the i7 over the i5 simply because i think Hyper threading will be worth it if you're planning to keep the cpu for the upcoming 6 years or longer.

I'm in the same situation as you pretty much, except im hanging on to the gtx 980. I decided not to bother upgrading until the 10nm cpus are out. I'm happy enough with the performance still. Its really a call for the individual. If you feel the need for better performance now, why wait.

..or reupgrade to that c64, the 6502 was the cpu of kings and the sid chip the music of the gods.

thanks guys....I'm gonna wait....will maybe get me a C64 on the way....or an Amiga 500...and maybe will get the current build a nicer home (I really like that View 71)....we'll see, on verra, wir sehen noch, we zullen zien....and stuff like that....topic can be closed...again, thx for the quick views on the matter, they helped !
