After .NET1.1 log in situation

Downloaded & installed Net1.1 since Paint.Net requires its presence. When
the computer was in an idle state yesterday and then mouse or keys used a
blue screen with my user name is present. Its necessary to click on my
account to get the regular desktop. Its like when its idle there is a 'log
off'.... Okay, I can handle that BUT.....its the start up procedure that is
a bit of a nuisance.

This is WindowsXp Sp2-home on a two computer workgroup with a D-Link
firewall (+ZoneAlarm pro, AVG 7) up to date with all fixes. I was only
missing net 1.1 Clear of any invasions according to scans (Adaware, Spybot,
Pest Patrol & Spywareblaster all up to date).

As the computer boots up an announcement arrives saying the system couldn't
automatically log me in, click on that message and the blue screen with the
user account arrives, click on it and all is normal. So it takes two steps
to get to the usual desktop
1. Read the 'cannot log in automatically' message (light blue screen with a
faded log in box)
2. Click on the dark blue screen where my account is listed on the right)

After downloading Net1.1. I checked out the issues and did follow the
instructions to RUN ControlUserPassword and I checked in the Registry to
see if the net1.1. patch 3 was needed. The missing number indicated it was
needed.

I tried the Run ControlUserPassword first which didn't change anything.
(selected my account from the now four choices
(Administrator,Guest,Addition by Net1.1, User)

This is a one user set-up. My account is USER with administrative privileges
and I have never had to log in since 2002 so I was guessing when I typed in
one of two choices for a password.

Q. IF I typed in the wrong password for USER while doing the
RunControlUserPassword command would that account for no change to these
extra steps to get started on the computer?

Q. Can I try the above command again with a second choice of possible
password? I wonder if these entries become recorded in the registry?

Q. If I apply the downloaded Patch 3 for Net 1.1. will I still be dealing
with the password?

Don't know if that's a typo but the correct procedure is to use
control userpasswords2.

Try the following,

Go to Start -> Run.
Copy and paste the following into the Open box:

control userpasswords2

Click OK.
Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer".
In the box that pops up enter your user name and
password (you can leave the password box blank if your account
does not have a password).
Click OK twice and reboot to see if you get the desired results.

RE: Go to Start -> Run.

Yes- I did use control userpasswords2
There were several reboots and eventually the screen just sat there with the
message 'Windows is starting up' and it never did. Shutting off the power
was the only recourse.
I thought about 'safe mode' but on another start up it didn't go into safe
mode but it did start so I uninstalled Net 1.1 and guess what ....the log in
business was still there. To add insult to injury the Paint.Net would not
uninstall. It seems there was something wrong with the installation engine.
My solution was to use a restore point before the installation of Net 1.1 .
That went perfectly and things are back to where they were.
Paint.Net surely looks like a great replacement for the Windows Accessory
Paint but its too much hassle with this net1.1 in my opinon.
