After purchase of a second graphics card, games crash

Hello, Tom's Hardware users.

As the title says, I recently purchased another graphics card for my gaming PC, expecting to be able to play games across three monitors. However, whenever I start up a game and span it across my three monitors, it crashes... sort of. Two of the screens (the ones that share a GPU) cut out and then display vertical lines across them. The middle screen stays intact, but I am unable to click on anything, and my cursor doesn't change when I mouse over anything. The only way I have found to get out of this is to restart my computer.

Did you even get crossfire enabled?
That board, though Asus website claims Xfire support (because the chipset does), only has 1 x16 slot. The other x16 slot is really only an x4 slot...

Also, if you are not at the 2501 bios version, there have been a few bios updates to improve system stability. You might try a bios update and see if that helps.
 

I am able to enable crossfire, but the point of getting three monitors was so I could use them for gaming. You can't enable Crossfire (in CCC) without shutting out one of the monitors.

I haven't tried updating bios, but I will give it a shot for sure. As for the x4 slot, what does that mean for my graphics card? That it isn't completely compatible with the motherboard slot?

Okay, I have updated my bios and I am still encountering the issue. I believe we may have made some progress though, because when I started the game up, it didn't happen until further into it, and it recovered from the crash the first time (which it never has before). Do you have any other ideas?

Also, I read that motherboards with x16 and x4 ports are common. Would that really be a factor in crashing my graphics cards?
 
no 16x and 4x crossfire fine, they will not cause instability, just a lil bit less performance, im leading to think you're using the wrong adapters, i know its rediculously hard even in this day and age to get 3 monitors working in games.. I know you cant just plug in whatever u want and expect it to work.. like 2 hdmi and a dvi, you need all kinds of adapters and shit
 


Very interesting. What kind of adapter connections would you suggest? Is there a website I can visit for more information on this?

Sry just realised you have a link, this is from AMD "To enable more than two displays, or multiple displays from a single output, additional hardware such as DisplayPort-ready monitors or DisplayPort 1.2 MST-enabled hubs may be required. Maximum two active adapters supported. See www.amd.com/eyefinityfaq for full details."

Found this aswel "Any AMD Eyefinity technology configuration that works with a single graphics card will work with AMD CrossFire™ technology, however all monitors must connect to the primary graphics card. In most systems, this will be the GPU installed closest to the CPU. This is true for both AMD Radeon™ graphics and AMD FirePro™ professional graphics products.​"

So it appears you need to connect all 3 to ONE gpu, and in order to do so you need active adapters, have a read
 

I have tried connecting all three displays to one monitor, but when I do that, one of the displays gets disabled.
As for the MST-enabled hubs, it sounds to me like they are required for connecting multiple displays to a single output. However, I have enough outputs for all three monitors on each card (2 DVI, 1 HDMI per). Shouldn't that mean that I don't need one, or do they improve the unified performance of my graphics cards?


Thanks for the suggestion. Another user suggested something like this too, so I'll ask you the same question I asked them. I have enough outputs for all three monitors on each card (2 DVI, 1 HDMI per card). It sounds to me like those Digital expansions are for PC's without enough outputs. Shouldn't mean I don't need one?

If you go through the list of cards that support Flex, his is not one of them. For the most part, only the ones labeled as Flex support it, and a couple that don't have the label. Not all Sapphire cards support Flex.

In the list, it has Flex at the end of the cards name. In his list, it does not. They are not the same card, unless there is a typo, but in the past, they had to have "flex" in the name, or it was not supported. This list only had 2 cards on it that did not have "flex" in the name. This is not likely any different.

I know it doesn't seem like much, but having the "flex" in the name, makes a big difference in this particular case.
 
I want to start by saying thank you all for your replies and time. I appreciate it.

I'd like to apologize that it took me a few days to get a Display Port to DVI adapter, and I just now realize that the adapter I purchased is likely passive. If it is, I will have to return this one and get an active one before I can test it. I don't know of a way to tell if it is active or passive other than by testing it. I couldn't find anything online about it. How can I make sure that it is an active adapter that I purchase?

Also, it was not a typo. That is the card that I have, not the flex version.

 


If they don't tell you it is active, it is likely not.
 
Alright, guys.

Today I went to micro center and got myself an active display port to DVI adapter. Here's the good news: I can now run all three monitors off of one card. The bad news is that my GPUs still crash after playing games. I am able to play for a slightly longer amount of time before it crashes, though.

Any other suggestions? I've uninstalled my display drivers through safe mode and reinstalled them already. What else could the issue be?
