After remote desktop cannot login to target machine

I used remote desktop professionally and it seemed pretty cool so I thought
I'd configure it at home in case it came in useful.

I have a workstaion with XP home and a laptop with XP Pro. I discovered
relatively quickly that I could only connect to the laptop from the
workstation. All seemed to go very well. But afterwards I found I couldn't
log on to the laptop in the usual way. I went back to the workstation, was
able to remote to the laptop, closed the connection again and the laptop was
all right. At one stage on the workstation there was fleetingly a dialog
about a session being closed by an administrator (I am an administrator on
both machines).

After that I closed the laptop but now I am unable to log in - it refuses,
again, to recognise my password. I can still remote to it (using the same
password).

Both machines are set-up with multiple logins.
I have a wireless network.
I have tried numerous reboots of both machines and wireless hub.
I've searched the Internet...

What have I stumbled into, what am I doing wrong?

OK, I solved this (on my lonesome).

The laptop and the desktop have different keyboard layouts; the desktop has
a full keyboard with a separate numeric keypad, the laptop has many
overloaded keys and, almost invisibly, has a keypad 'under' the letters on
the right-hand side. After using RD the laptop's keyboard is switched to
numlock on - the same state as the desktop. No secret now then, that all
passwords on the laptop include some characters from the right side.

Workaround: choose passwords using just Q-Y etc. Or, try with and without
depressing the easy to miss numlock key on the top row.

A curio but reproducible, although maybe if left alone for a few moments
after the RD session, the laptop might sort itself out, but certainly
immediately trying to use it results in this behaviour.

good troubleshooting. It'd be interesting to know whether the state of the
LED light which indicates the NUM LOCK condition of the physical keyboard of
the laptop is toggled appropriately when this condition happens.

I don't think this will clear by itself. It will likely clear on a reboot,
because num-lock state is set at startup.
