Do after market speakers need to be made by the same manufacturer to work well together?

No.

However, if there are problems each manufacturer is likely to blame the other.

Look for products (speakers) that adhere to stated standards.

My general recommendation is to stay with the same (or one) manufacturer just to avoid possible "finger-pointing".

Otherwise you will be on your own to resolve any speaker problems.
