Age of empires Unable to join

Myself and my brother in law are trying to start of game
of Age of Empires. We go to the MSNZone and one of us
hosts a game. then the hoster launches and we both load
up. it for the person joining it gets all the way to the
part about starting multiplayer game, then it
says "unable to join". We have tried alternating hosting
and that doesn't work. we have tried direct connect and
that doesn't work. we both have current up to date
versions and are both on comcast/cable connections. Have
no idea what to do, can anyone help?
