AGP 1.0 vs. 2.0

What is "AGP 1.0" and "AGP 2.0"?

I ask because I may have an incompatibility problem between a video card and M/B. But I don't know the basic difference between 1.0 and 2.0. All data I can find on motherboards refers to "1x", "2x" and "4x", but I presume that those are not what I am refering to.

My main problem in asking this is I do plan an upgrade in teh future, and since none of the specs I've seen say "AGP 2.0", as a software box might, I'm worried I'll grab a board that won't work.

Can anyone shed some light?
 
I wouldn't worry.

99.9% that the card you get will work in your motherboard if it has an AGP slot. Even higher chance it'll work if your motherboard is new.
 
Well, that's what my problem is - I have an AGP card that's not working right, and it MAY be due to AGP incompatibility - though I can't figure out WHICH AGP Bus I have (Sandra lists "PCI/AGP" bus as "2.1", but I believe that's just the PCI bus).

Maybe I'm in the 0.1%, but I'm trying to get conformation on this...
 
That's weird. Usually, cards should be backward compatible. Have you tried checking the specs of the video card? Usually, they'd list what type of mainboard they will work on.

The difference between AGP 1.0 and 2.0 is that 2.0 offers higher voltage to the video card. GPU's are going the way of CPU's in terms of voltage- they are wanting a lot. That's it though- it's probably an incompatibility somewhere else- not the AGP bus.

Ahh, but the new Geforce2Go uses up very little power to conserve laptop batteries. I wonder if that's 1.0 or 2.0, or something completely different.

Well, I'm still trying to figure it out.

My "other" theory is the monitor - I have an older, PB 1411 (of which there are no current drivers, I've been using the driver for the PB 8510SV, as recommended by PB), and once had a problem with the frequency of the monitor and my old card - it had some similar problems. That got fixed through updated drivers, and flashing the card bios.

Also, some clarification on the problem - while DOS's screens "overrun" to the right and bottom, Window's screens are a) on every other line and b) appear to "loopback" vertically - a window, starting at the top, overflows off the bottom, and in every alternate line from the top, is picked up again.

So, while I try to get my hands on a recent monitor to test it out, I'm wondering if something changed in monitors / video cards' evolution to make a 5 year old monitor incompatible. (btw, I've tried all sorts of monitor drivers, and have no problem with my current card and the "generic" drivers).

I have also just discovered that there appears to be a lack of information about AGP V2.0 and that it is sometimes confused with AGP2X.
I installed an Hercules Prophet II MX Dual Display in my ABIT KA7-100 and the monitor appeared "dead". I was told by the supplier that there was a "known problem" with the ABIT board and that it would have to returned to ABIT for modification. I was completely unaware of this and just assumed that I could plug in any AGP card.

I am not sure how common this problem is and whether it only happens with ABIT boards but as another poster reported it does appear to be due to the extra voltage/power requiremnts
