Asus A7V KT133 (Award Bios ver. 1005B) AMD 800 (OC 900) 384 MB SDRAM GeForce2 MX Win98 SE

I erroneously installed AMD's AGP miniport driver ver. 4.80 and now my AGI 56X CDROM will not respond. The CDROM is detected in W98 SE but can't read the disk. My ZIP CD-R was unaffected eventhough on the same ribbon. 56X is master and ZIP is slave on secondary IDE. I swapped them with appropriate settings with same results. New drivers from AGI did not help.

Anyone know what caused this problem and a possible solution? Thanks in advance.

You should be able to run the setup.exe again and choose uninstall.

Thanks OldBear

As it turned out, the CD Rom is busted. I put it in another computer with the same result. Did not know installing a miniport driver could render a CD Rom useless. Oh well. Guess I'll get that DVD/CD Rom after all.

It was probably coincidence that it happened. The miniport driver is only a piece of software, and has no effect whatsoever on the CD-ROM. ALl it does is improve data transfet between the CPU and the AGP slot.

well..there was supposedly some viruses that could overclock your computer through software, and sometimes permanently damage it..
but i dont see why the via miniport diver would screw up a drive.

yea.....could be just a coincidence as the AGI is pretty cheap and was about a year old with alota use.
Guess I'll look for a good ata 100 DVD drive.
