IS there much of a loss by having a PCI slot GeForce 2 GTS over a AGP slot?

Actually PCI is half the speed of AGP 1X.
It's worse than that.

PCI is 32-bit and AGP is 64-bit.

At 33mhz, PCI transfers data at 132MB/sec

At 66mhz, AGP (1X) transfers at 528MB/sec

...and the PCI is a shared bus. The bandwidth is spread between all PCI peripherals.

Yes, you are right. AGP is a 32-bit bus and I was wrong and confused (happens a lot LOL). What confused me is that AGP bus can transfer data on both the leading and trailing edge of each clock pulse. Thus, AGP bus can transfer 8 bytes per clock pulse where PCI can only transfer 4 bytes. Since the AGP clock is twice as fast as the PCI clock that means four times the bandwidth. 33mhz * 4 bytes = 132MB/second. 66mhz * 8 bytes = 528MB/second.

PCI is 1/4 the speed of AGP1x. That's 1/8 the speed of AGP2x. 1/16 the speed of AGP4x. It's so bad that a GeForce2 cannot significantly outperform the TNT (that's the TNT 1!) for framerates when restricted that far.

Yes, the AGP (Advanced/Accellerated Graphics Port) slot was made specificly to give video cards the bandwith they needed for intense applications.

60 FPS, 70 FPS, 80 FPS Crash!

um, that's not right Crashman. PCI is 133MB/s, AGP1X is 266MB/s, AGP2X is 533MB/s and AGP4X is 1066MB/s. So AGP4X is only 8 times faster than PCI.

You guys are all wrong!! PCI is only half of AGP1X. Think of it this way, AGP4X came out the same time PC133 did so it had the same bandwidth as PC133 which is approx. 1GB/s. AGP2X was half of that, or approx. 533MB/s. AGP1X was half of that, 266MB/s. PCI is half of that, or 133MB/s. AGP is not 64-bit, it just uses DDR-like technology to do more work per cycle.

AGP1X only processed on the rising edge of each clock cycle. So it's 66MHz * 4 = 266MB/s
