Everybody has told me that the AGP Bus Slot's AGP Version (not the transfer rate) is determined by the hardware, and it cannot be upgraded.

Now some have suggested that it can be upgraded thru the bios.

Anybody know for sure?

The max AGP transfer rate depends on the chipset and not the software. There are (in my knowledge) 2 AGP versions, 1.0 and 2.0. The first one supports AGP transfer rates 1x (66 MHz) and 2x (132 MHz). The second one supports 1x, 2x and 4x (264 MHz) transfer rates.
It can NOT be upgraded by any software.
The thing that you can do is to switch (from BIOS) between the transfer rates allowed for your chipset. (i.e. you can’t set AGP 4x in a AGP version 1.0)
