AI on Regent?

I am playing my first game on Regent. I know it might not be that be a deal
for people who are at diety but I'll be there some day. Two Questions:

1.) 4 other civs and I are kinda big (25 or so cities) and France is on a
little bitty island with at most 10 cities. It's 1856AD. How in the heck is
she getting techs so fast. I have my science up as much as i can without
losing all my money and some big cities on wealth and I still end up being
two - three techs behind while other Ai are even further behind. She can't
be stealing them from anyone as no one has them. Strange or complety normal?

2.) Not really a question but ... Anyone got any tips for a newb like myself
on keeping these damn AI polite and happy at least for awhile. I can't play
a game without having every AI civ at war with me or threating to take my
territory map and 10 gold or so. Also any tips about anything you think I
should be given would be greatly apreciated.

Thanx

France may be in their Golden Age. Have you had yours yet? They
could also have nabbed some Great Wonders which give free tech or
maintenance costs. Ten cities isn't all that bad if they are all good
cities. If you have more than the optimal number of cities
corruption goes up making many of them useless. France is also
industrious and commercial. Their fast workers give them an excellent
road structure. That and the commercial bonuses could be helping.

On the military advisor screen watch if he says you are strong, weak,
or average compared to the other civs. The weaker the AI thinks you
are the more likely they are to declare war. Consider trading world
maps more frequently. The AI seems to value how often you trade more
than the quality of the trades. Yet most of the time there isn't
anything else to trade. Get embassies, ROP, and alliances to make
them more friendly toward you. Also note that some civs are more
aggressive than others and their general attitude is effected by your
culture group. For instance if you are both Asian civs they are more
likely to be friendly. But if they are the Mongols they still might
declare war since that is what Mongols love to do.

Hmm...

France is Commercial so they have more commerce points plus they get cheap
Marketplaces which enhances their commerce production even more. France will
suffer less from corruption than you will. It sounds like the French cities
are all coastal cities which will generate a lot of commerce. If they are
turning that commerce into research then city for city they are probably doing
better than you.

Do you have Marketplaces in all your cities? Is every tile being worked by
your city have a road on it? (You want all 20 of the potentially workable
tiles to have roads.) Do you have Libraries everywhere? Are many of your
citizens Entertainers? Have you built your Forbidden Palace? Courthouses?
Are you a Republic?

If France sells techs to the other AI's on a gold per turn basis they may
effectively be the _only_ AI doing research. Once that situation develops it
tends to be stable. You can peaceably break this cycle by selling your techs
to the other AIs. If France stops getting her imported gold then her research
will slow down while yours will increase.

Who got the Colossus?

You get the AI to like you by trading. I like to export Luxuries and import
gold.

As for the extortion, check with your military advisor (F3). If he says that
your military is weaker than theirs the solution is to build or upgrade more
_offensive_ units (Knights or Medieval Infantry for example). If your
military is the same size or larger stop paying! As long as you pay, they
will ask.

I've not encountered any such problem.

Maybe she's ahead because she has her science at 100%, and is funding
herself by selling to the others? They have to keep their taxes up in order
to be able to pay her.

Another factor might be that you and the other civs have been involved in a
lot of debilitating wars, and consequently have been forced to neglect your
infrastructure.

Give them your territory map and 10 gold.

Thanks for the great info. It all was very usefull. Im going to start
finding out about each civ when I play a game as then you can figure out how
they work and all there advantages.

Wow. Thanks for all the great info. I took your advise on breaking there
cycle of trade for gpt. Once I caught up to her in tech I began to sell all
my techs for gpt.

It was hard to stay ahead but I did and won the space race. In the end I had
48 cities and a huge army as I was Monarcy for the entire game. I have'nt
been able to figure out how to use Republic to my advantage.

As for trade and keeping them happy I noticed once your army is as strong or
stronger than theres some AI tend to not want to piss you off so they stay
annoyed or polite. I have yet to have a gracious AI. I think Im always
considered a War mongler (spelling not sure).
