So I am building a new system and plan on getting an 11700K and overclocking it modestly, to about 4.6.

I've done the same with my current 8700K with the Le Grand Macho RT and am very happy, no issues and good temperatures for almost 4 years.

The pro of the grand macho is that it doesn't block ram and I guess is more failure proof than the AIO im looking into, the Arctic liquid freezer 360.

  • Will the ALF be significantly better in terms of cooling the 11700K than the Macho? DOes the 11700K run hotter than the 8700k?
  • I've really heard conflicting opinions, is it possible that LE Grand Macho might cool better than the AIO?
I"m using a Corsair 570x for this build.

Stop right there. Get online, search YouTube for Gamersnexus or Hardware Unboxed or Paul's reviews on the 11700k. It's utter overpriced garbage. High price, high heat and no gains over the cheaper 10700k of last gen except in rare occasions, and by much there either.

The Only Intel cpu's worth anything right now are the 11400, 11600k or 10900k.

For just gaming, the 11600k with some OC is basically boss, it's value only approached by the 11400. Production necessity is the only reason to require the 10900k. Simple need for 10/20 cores/threads.

The answer to all the questions you asked is Yes, and No.

The answer to all the questions you asked is Yes, and No.

The 8700k and 11700k run roughly the same, up until you OC, at full loads, then the wattage of the 11700k vastly out numbers that of the 8700k.

Coolers are rated in TDP. Thermal Design. The LeGrand Macho is a 230w (ish) cooler, the AF is a 350w (ish) cooler, so cooling curves are quite different. At 100w (ish) stock values, the LGM is around 50ish % on its wattage curve, so cooling will be good. The AF is at 30ish %, so if you slow the fans way down, you'll get the same cooling as the LGM, but running a standard fan curve, it has greater cooling possibilities.

Get that LGM to the 250w ish range, and you'll be seeing shutdowns, the cooler insufficient for the cpu outputs, yet the AF is only 66% ish on its curve, so has plenty of headroom.

It's not that a bigger cooler is 'better', it's that a bigger cooler has higher capacity. Below that capacity, it's all on efficiency, so ranking one 360mm vs another 360mm is all dependent on the fans etc, but measuring an aircooler vs a 360mm AIO is patently unfair advantage.

Below 100w, the Noctua NH-U12S has somewhat higher efficiency, so gets actual lower temps than the Noctua NH-D15, but beyond 150w, the U12S just doesn't have the capacity to match, so gets swamped.

So on a 5600x, the LGM stands a good chance at getting lower temps than the AF, but on a pushed 11700k the AF is going to slaughter the LGM.

Efficiency and Capacity are Not the same thing.

Wow, thank you so much for a thoughtful and thorough reply.
I do want to future proof my new rig for AAA titles at max in the next five or so years, so I'm reading your reply as a clear recommendation to go with the AF and consider 11600k instead of the 11700K. Thanks again.

Le Grand Macho RT is a 320w cooler with the stock fan, add a TY-143 for the full effect.. you can push 250+ with that cooler all day no problem.

Edit:

I did replace my LGMRT with a Frost Commander 140 and wont be putting it back..
