The fat cats are talking at a G8 summit now, and one of their brilliant
ideas is imposing a tax on all airline fares in participating nations which
will be given to Africa to assist them in their woes there. Any thoughts?

Cash in most African nations never makes it below the first level tier of
the Fat Cats in power. So, if you want to make the Fat Cats richer, it's a
great idea.

If you want to help Africa, send something the Fat Cats don't care about...
like food.

But you need a armed escort for anything more valuable that used diapers, or
the war lords (i.e. government) end up with it........

If you want to help African nation give them easy equipment to find or
produce water (from sea water).
Food is a multiplying factor.

Or condoms. AIDS and population growth are two of the biggest problems right
now....

This is very good news for Switzerland.

I just have to ask: Why is this good news for Switzerland?

The main reason I posted the original question is because I don't think it's
particularly fair to the airline industry and their customers, to have to
assume the burden of another tax, which will ultimately be paid by the
passengers. When I purchase a ticket to fly from Toronto Canada, Federal
Goods and Services Tax, Provincial Sales Tax, Fuel Tax, Airport Tax, Luxury
Tax and probably a few others I don't even know about are tacked on. I
think on a $200 ticket, I likely pay an additional $100 in taxes. Now, they
are considering an additional tax to give money to Africa.

I have nothing against giving anything to Africa if it will help the people
out, but where will it stop? Are they going to tax my airfare because there
are people hungry in Asia, tax my airfare to rebuild Asia after the Tsunami,
tax my airfare to rebuild Baghdad, tax my airfare to pay M.J.'s legal bill?
Excuse me, but all this smacks of a world-type of communism.

I'm aware some of my federal taxes are going to help other countries in need
and that's all well and good, but leave my airfare alone!

I suspect they already do...

Junk taxes are just a way to raise taxes and look like you're not raising
taxes. I love what they do to phone taxes in the US... The phone costs
$25 bucks a month, by the time they add all the junk taxes it's more like
$40 bucks.

My $66 phone bill for June had $8.44 in taxes. I have regular phone
service with call waiting/id etc. $20 and $10 in long distance for 500
minutes US only as well as $26 DSL service (1.5Mbps). The taxes are
excessive, but not $15.00.

As for taxing air fare to help needy nations, history shows us that
anything we give to warlord nations (undemocratic nations) goes to the
war lord. I suggest we give the money to Kofi Annan and have his son
Kojo distribute it fairly and equitably.

Yeah, why didn't we think of that! [slap forehead] Kofi and Kojo are stand
up guys, and we can always depend on them!
Lets see now - $150,000,000.00 divided two ways
is.....................................

Now be fair CRASH, it was only $149,999,995.00. As Ben Franklin would
say $5.00 saved is $5.00 earned. <grin>

In the UK with our Value Added Tax at 17.5% that tax would have been the
equivalent of over $10! Think yourselves lucky! ;0))
