hey guys finally got all my gear for my i7 build and downloaded the gigabytes i7 920 overclock guide which referes to my mobo and cpu and does what it says i can get the cpu up to 4gig on air no problem but im not greedy 3.6 will do me.

The cooler i bought was a Akasa AK-967 Nero i7 HSF which was given good results from users on overclockers.co.uk of low heat when under prime and overclocked to around the 3.6 mark im after one guy says "Keeps my i7 920 at 3.8ghz at 60oC load with HT on, best cooler out for the i7 at the moment."

but this does not seem to be happening with me my stock clock settings and under prime is around 57oC and when OC to even 3gig and under prime im getting reading of 97oC before i panic and kill prime.

i have an Antec 900 case with all fans on high settings includeing side one, ive used Artic silver 5 for paste and the HSF is fitted correctly?????

Anyone got any ideas at all why temps are so high???

next step if cant get any results is water me finks

by the way anyone thats has a gigabyte ex58 extream mobo and an i7 920 and whats the OC guide heres the link.

Methinks you need a reseat. Too much paste, not mounted properly etc.

Does it have pushpins? If so are you 100% sure all the pins are locked?

Sometimes looking at the bottom of the mobo is the only way to tell.

thanks for your reply, yeah they are 100% home, ive been looking at the lapping things but that cant happen with this cooler as the heat pipes actually are part of the die.

All help greatfully accepted guys.

How did you apply paste? It has exposed heatpipes right? A very very thin line on each exposed pipe is what I have been seeing on those. Have you checked the CPU for concave using a razor blade on the top? Might need to lap it. That chip is a hot one once overclocked.

Whats your ambient room temps and you do have the CPU fan on high?

I have applied the paste twice, once using the Artic silver instructions on the chip and applied some on the pipes and once using the freezer bag on the finger to smooth it over the chip with out any on the pipes second time was more successful with lower temps, room temp is about 22oC.
Not checked the chip for the concave surface as I just found out last night about the lapping thing I had never heard of it before to be honest, Im not keen on trying my first time on my new CPU.
All fans, 4x120mm case, 1x200mm case and 120 HSF all on high settings
