Could one be both?

Or rather, I'm thinking, would the process of becoming an Akuma be
interfered with/prevented by the presence/binding of a Monstrance of
Celestial Portion?

'Cause that'd be a f'n cool NPC.

i think nephipal suggested it couldn't happen

but i don't really see problems with that. abissal exalteation messes
with your solar shard. the way it seems to work, akuma-ing someone
messes instead with his higher soul...

Abyssal Exaltation perverts your Essence, which is thereafter bound to
the monstrance of celestial portion.

Investiture of Infernal Glory "stain an Exalted Essence to create a
prince among akuma. .... forfeiting part of his soul with a prayer of
supplication.

So, no.

But, my question stands. It's generally predicated on, "How much control
does an Abyssal still have over his Essence?"

Not as much as the Yozi do.

Mind you, I have not even heard the term Akuma before today. But when it
comes to knowing how to bend, twist, and mutilate Essences, the Demon
Princes know more than they showed the Deathlords.

You should read the description of the physical process involved with
becoming one of the Resplendent Slaves of the Yozis. It makes the Cauls
look like a weekend vacation.

You know, call me jaded, but the Cauls never really made me wince. I'd
expect nothing less of the Yozis to have a cool and horrifying method of
creation.

And I'm sure it makes up for the "Dunk him in a vat of rubber!" that we have
for the Alchemicals. ^_~
