alchemy smalchemy

When I first started playing MW, I avoided alchemy
because I didn't like the idea of carrying around
lots (Lots!) of miscellaneous items and spending
a lot (Lot!) of mouseclicks dealing with them. Then
I discovered the superalchemy of compounding fortified
intellect potions. Alchemy went from ineffective to
as close to infinitily powerful as you wanted to mix
potions for. That was fine for a short (Short!)
while. Then I sought effective alchemy that wasn't
overpowered. I didn't like Sri's Alchemy for this
(which is many people's solution) because I didn't
like removing restocking from merchants and I wasn't
particularly anxious to have the effects of lots of
ingredients altered (or to having most of them
weighing a lot more).

I have discovered a solution that works for me. I
enchant a ring to +100 alchemy and another to +100
intellect. When both these items are powered up,
I can make decent effect potions. And I don't have
to decide each time I mix how many, if any, fortify
intellect potions to mix. My current heal potions,
for example, run around 20 for 60 seconds (Alchemy
is my Bosmer's specialty, and she is high level).
This is adequate to handle an occasional horde of
tough fighters, without making any opposition
irrelevant.

Thought I'd pass the tip along to any interested
players out there.

On a slightly related note, does anyone know where
ash yams grow? I pick ingredients, and have only
seen these in modded areas. I added bloat spores
to my game with a mod. I am trying to be able to forage
all ingredients. Bloat and ash yams were problematical.
The fortify intellect discussion reminded me of this
little issue 🙂

An even simpler fix: If you don't like it, don't do it. I discovered
super-alchemy on my second game, stopped that one about halfway through
and since have voluntarily not abused it. I will still use Fortify
Int. Once. Not stacking 30-50 potions to make superpotions. Remember
this is supposed to be "Role Playing" - you decide wether you go the
munchin route or not.

You know, I'm on my umpteenth character and not one of them, not even
the mages, has _ever_ mixed a potion. I don't think I'd even know
how....

There are a number of farms West of Suran that grow ash yams. I'm
pretty sure that ash yams are grown on the farms in unmodded games,
though its been a long time since I played an unmodded game, so I
could be wrong. ^_^

Good Luck!

That's my 2¢,

My characters always use alchemy and have it as a major. I don't use it to
stack potions. But potions are the only things that app;y instantly in
battle. Moreover, with alchemy mid-level, your potions become stronger and
longer-lasting than those you buy.

I agree. Overusing alchemy ruins the game. However, if you limit yourself to
ONE fortify int and ONE fortify luck when making potions then it's not too
bad, although still a bit unbalanced (I suppose that means I should never
use fortify int or fortify luck at all - may be I'll try that next time).
