Question Alert! Previous thermal failure

My brother bought an Optiplex 7010 off of amazon recently. It has an i5-3470. Recently hes been having a few issues with it's thermals. When he was playing Gmod the fans rev high. I guess he shut it down and turned it back on and when he did it took him to a menu in the bios. The bios reports a Thermal Failure. But the temp was around 50°C. He ran internal diagnostics and it doesn't detect any issues. The pc was a ceritfied referbished pc. Anything to check/could be going wrong? Any help will be appreciated, thanks

repaste the thermal paste, check the cpu fan

Ok, i'll have him re-apply the thermal paste. It may be a few days as he dosen't live near me and he has to buy some. I had him check to make sure the cooler was mounted correctly and that all the fans are functional. I will give an update after he applies new thermal paste to the cooler.
