Just recently bought a used Alienware 17 from a friend, i7 4910mq at 4.1Ghz. He replaced the thermal paste for both cpu and gpu (can't remember what he used). At idle I'm around 50-60 °C and while gaming, or sometimes just copying large files, the cpu temperature fluctuates a lot, usually around 80. When gaming, it reaches 100°C, most of the time in the 90's. I have had two thermal shutdowns so far.
I tried disabling the oc, but it did not help. Reduced the voltage to 1.2V, still nothing.
Laptop is on a hard surface, room temperature is around 18-20°C, and using Win 7 ultimate. I don't have any experience in overclocking.
