Alienware alpha 1920x1080p @ 120hz

I have an Alienware alpha with an i7 4785t and I'm trying to push 120hz at 1080p on a 24 inch monitor that supports up 144hz, I don't think the hdmi will support it because when I select 120hz I get a black screen, I have a dvi single link to hdmi converter that I've tried but the max I can achieve is 1280 @ 75hz will a dual link dvi adapter help? I'm also using a very high quality hdmi cable (audio quest pearl) any input would be appreciated, I'm trying to play a go so 120hz is essential to me

My Alienware alpha only has hdmi can I just use a male display port to male hdmi?
