I am currently interested in the base model of an alienware alpha (i like how compact it is) and was wondering how its gtx 840m graphics card compares to the graphics cards in an xbox one or ps4?

Thanks!

Its not a comparable system but the 860m (as far as I can tell its 860 not 840) is not as good the PS4 GPU which is similar to a radeon 7870 but may be similar to the XB1. If it is 840m then its not in the same league as either.
Not sure how it specifically compares in terms of models to be honest. I bought the base model Alpha when it came out a few months ago, and am honestly pretty impressed. Sure, you can build a higher powered PC for cheaper, but in terms of a pre built PC it is comparable to both the PS4 and Xbox one (I own all 3, and swap between systems to test this regularly.) I think it is not a bad value for the price, and honestly love the processing speed and new architecture.

It's nota 840 it's a modified 860. I'm not sure why Dell insists on being so vague about the exact part but it's hard to find solid info on it.

I thought I read that it has more pipes than a regular 860m. At any rate - to my eyes games run better with more detail than on my PS 4.

The PS4 will run better even if the alpha had a slightly more powerful card as the alpha needs to run general purpose software (windows), its just a PC (more screenless laptop)in a small box. I like the idea but it looses all the upgradability of a PC, in a few years they should be able to make something better and cheaper than a PS4 just as small but it will always sacrifice power &/or value for size. On the plus side you can save a fortune on games in steam sales etc and use a keyboard and mouse or a controller.

The custom gtx 860M is on par with the PS4. The Alpha is in fact upgradeable. I'm not sure if you can upgrade the gpu though, as it is custom to the Alpha. But everything else can be upgraded. I put in 16gb ram & may do the hard drive cause it's painfully slow on installs. Consoles are faster in that regard.
Not sure if the Alpha will work with remote play on a Nvidia Shield device cause of the custom GPU.
Anyone know this?
