Hi everyone, I've recently come across a really good deal on an Alienware m15x and was thinking of buying it to upgrade. I've already determined that the GPU can be upgraded pretty significantly if you have the proper power supply, but there wasn't any definitive answer on upgrading the CPU. I've noticed the current CPU, the i7-720QM, is the same socket as Sandy Bridge offerings such as the i7-2820QM. Is it possible to upgrade this laptop to a Sandy Bridge chip?

Solution
i've wanted to do that and no they will not.. the number of pins are the same but different locations... but the GPU i'd go with the r9 m290x.. its 100w tdp (same as 6990m)

btw if you upgrade anymore the brick will die if it work too much... i take my cover off and have a fan on it. my last one died
specs
alienware m15x
i7 920xm
6990m oc'ed
8gb ram
512gb ssd
4tb external hdd

Thanks for your reply and the info. I actually ended up buying an Alienware 15 R2 with an i7-4710HQ, 16GB RAM, a GTX 970M, and a 256gb ssd along with a 1tb hard drive.
