Hey guys,
So I recently inherited an old Alienware X51 R2 from a friend of mine. It has a:
Obviously, this computer is super old and not really up to scrap in 2019, but I also received another friend's old GTX 970 (the base G1 Gaming model - no blower style cooling) and two 8gb sticks fo G-Skill Ares DDR3.
I've never built or modified a computer before, but I'm wondering if it's worth it to transfer the parts from the x51 to a new case so that I can use the 970 and upgraded RAM with it (the 970 does not fit in the standard x51 case).
I've heard the 970 won't work with anything less than a 500w power supply, but I've also heard that it does work with a 330w. Similarly, I've heard that the x51 motherboard doesn't work with a 970, but other people have said that it does.
Is this worth to trouble? Or should I just look into building a budget computer from the ground up with newer components?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!
