All BIOS settings reset at boot

Hi,

I've had my gaming PC for 2 years now and the last few days it keeps giving me this screen on boot:

I always just press F2 but it's getting annoying and I started getting that screen since a month or so.

I have an MSI Z97 Gaming 5 mobo with an I5-4690K, My OS (win10) is on a samsung SSD.

(I'm not sure if this belongs in the Motherboards category, but I don't know where else to ask)

I was thinking that might cause it, but if the CMOS battery was broken, I think my system wouldn't boot at all. but with replacing do you mean get a new CMOS battery or just take it out and put it back in again?

The pc will boot fine with no bios battery, but when it shuts down it will lose all of the settings (exactly what is happening with your system)

Both of the other solutions are correct, get a new bios battery (usually a CR2032) - but check before buying.

Make sure you buy a 2032 battery and take care when you flip the old one out. You do that with the power off and no remaining flea power. You ensure that by removing the power cable and pressing the power button until the LED goes completely out.

Pop the new one in and the system should be able to remember what happened last time it was in future. You will have to remake and changes you had in BIOS because they could have reverted to Default settings.

The CMOS battery doesn't "break", it simply goes flat after a while just like any other type of disposable battery. It provides just enough power to maintain custom BIOS settings between boot cycles.

When it goes flat, all custom BIOS settings are lost so the BIOS falls back to factory default settings. This is all normal behaviour, you simply need to replace the battery with a new one.
