All folders, files, and pictures that were on my desktop are no longer there. How do I put them back on the desktop

All folders, files, and pictures that were on my desktop are no longer there. The desktop is blank. I can get to the folders, files and pictures by going to my computer and moving down until I get to desktop, BUT I WANT THEM TO SHOW UP ON MY DESKTOP. Can someone please tell me how to fix this? I am sure I did something that I thought was right when I should have left things alone. I don't even have the trash can on my desktop.

Right-click on the desktop >>>>>>>>>>> View >>> Show desktop icons.
